Together with Plaza de Catalunya, it is one of the hotspots of Barcelona. Indeed, being within walking distance from one of the main train station of the city, Barcelona Sants, it is a way point in several tourist routes. Located at the foot of the Montjuich, Plaza de Espanya consists in a wide roundabout. Differently from Plaza de Catalunya, therefore, it is not a space reserved to pedestrians, but rather a huge traffic connection. Nevertheless, it also presents several features of interest, mostly located in the surrounding area.
The structure of the square, in the first place, is quite noteworthy. Right in the middle of it a fine fountain is located. Coming from Sants station, on the northern side of the plaza, it is possible to appreciate a wonderful sight: the fountain appears to be framed between two curious towers, vaguely resembling the bell tower of the cathedral of San Marco in Venice. Moreover, in the background the impressive mass of the MNAC, towering from the Montjuich hill, appears to complete the setting. Most of the buildings in the square, including a series of white marble porches, were realised in view of the International Exposition in 1929.
On the northern side of Plaza de Espanya, besides, a remarkable building is situated. Despite having the unmistakable shape of a plaza de toros, it obviously does not serve this purpose any more (a few years ago corridas were banned from Catalunya). In recent years, indeed, the edifice was restored and currently is a huge shopping centre. From the top floor it is possible to enjoy nice views of the city.
In the surrounding area, a couple of interesting parks is also found. Walking northward along Carrer de Tarragona, the Parc de Joan Mirò is found on the right side. Actually, the park would be quite dull but for a special feature of interest, namely a sculpture by Mirò himself. The monument, called Dona i Ocell (Woman and Bird) and of somewhat phallic form, bears the characteristic marks of Mirò's style: uniform and bright colours, sinuous lines and the taste for monumental architecture which characterised the last phase of his production. Even more weird is the Parc d'Espanya Industrial, located right opposite Sants station. Consisting in a series of strange pinnacles, some ponds and a few tiny waterfalls, it is a pretty odd example of green open space.
