Small but enchanting
Not to be confused with the Palau Reial de Pedralbes, already described in a previous post, the Palau Reial Major is located in the very heart of Barcelona, namely in Plaza del Rei. Dating back to the 13th century, it presents a mighty and austere architecture, devoid of all those decorations and daring structure which characterised the following centuries. Once the abode of the earls of Barcelona, it then became the residence of the kings of Aragon, before being devolved to the Spanish crown. Nowadays, the palace is included in the Museu de Historia de Barcelona, so the only way to have a look at it is through a visit to the museum.
However, I dare saying that the two spaces open to the visitors are really worth see. Walking through the Salò del Tinell, a wide spacious room which once housed the banquets of the sovereigns, it is hard to think that, about five centuries ago, this hall housed the memorable encounter of Cristopher Columbus with Isabel, queen of Castile, and Fernando, king of Aragon. At the moment, the room sometimes houses temporary expositions, but it is still possible to admire the fine arches supporting the ceiling.
Far more interesting, though, is the adjacent Capilla de Santa Agata, built in 1302 as the place of worship for the noble dwellers. A delicious product of the Gothic style, it is really enchanting despite the limited extension. It is interesting to notice that the church is leaning about the ancient Roman walls, which at the time of the construction enclosed the Ciutat Vella. Actually, one of the side chapels on the left side was even built inside the walls. Inside the church, it is possible to admire an amazing altarpiece, realised by Jaume Huguet, one of the most celebrated painters of the Catalan court. Moreover, apart from the fine designs decorating the walls, a series of colourful stained glass windows allows wonderful views on Plaza del Rei.
