Bunker del Carmel, Turò de la Rovira

A full view of Barcelona

If you're looking for an awesome view of Barcelona, you can't miss the "Bunker del Carmel". Located in the district of El Carmel, in the upper part of the mountain Turò de la Rovira, this place was transformed during the civil war by the construction of some bunkers made to protect the city from flight attacks. After the war, some houses were built in the surroundings, creating a small neighborhood, and the whole area was then retrained in order to realize an historical site.

The main reason to come here, though, is the full view of the city: you can see Port Olímpic, Montjuic, Sagrada Familia, Torre Agbar, the Cathedral and, of course, the unmistakable streets of the Eixample. The view is always amazing, but I would recommend to go at sunset or very early in the morning and spend some time enjoying the view.

A few tips:

  • The entrance is free.
  • The best way to arrive is to take the bus (24 or 28), the last stop is quite close to the bunker and then you will have to walk a bit.

Best view on Barcelona and its sunset from Bunker del Carmel

After living for 5 months in the beautiful city of Barcelona, Bunker del Carmel (often just known as "Bunkers") has become one of my favorite places in the city.

There are quite a lot of places from where you can get a nice view on the city. The most known ones are probably Tibidabo and Park Güell, but to me the most spectacular view is found here at the Bunker del Carmel.

As it is not written in any tourist guide you are pretty safe from loads of tourists up here (as safe as you can be in Barcelona! ). Still there are always many people coming up there to see the sunset, although those are mostly international students or local people.

To get there you can take the yellow line (L4) of the metro to the stop Alfonso X and if you get out the metro station you just need to go straight ahead towards the "mountain" in front of you. On the top you will find the bunkers. It is quite a walk up there, so better come early to not miss the stunning sunset over the city. As the place is under construction, sometimes it might be blocked in some parts. But usually there are some ways to make it to the top anyway.

The Bunker was actually really a bunker at the time of the Spanish civil war in 1937. You can still see some parts of it, which gives the place a very special atmosphere, definitely a lot different from all the other touristic viewpoints of the city.

If it is for a picnic in the afternoon or to have some drinks in the evening while enjoying the sunset, at the bunkers, you can spend some magical hours, looking down on the beautiful city of Barcelona, its sea and its surrounding area.
