A collection of collections
Surprised by some chilly showers of rain in the centre of Barcelona, I once decided to take shelter in some of the few museums which the Ciutat Vella has to offer. The first of them has been the museum Frederic Mares, located in the ancient palace of the earls of Barcelona, right next to the Cathedral. The entrance fee was not particularly high (4, 20 Euros and, as usual, free access on the first Sunday of each month), so I decided to try my luck.
In point of fact, the museum consists in a vast collection of objects, once belonging to Frederic Mares, a wealthy voyager with a passion for sculpture (and for collections in general, as you will understand after visiting the museum). During his frequent journeys around Spain (and the rest of Europe), Mares gathered an incredible variety of things: sculptures, paintings, metal keys of all kinds, pipes of any shapes and material.
The ground floor normally houses temporary exhibitions, while the most interesting part of the collection is probably found at the first floor. It is a series of medieval wooden sculptures, most of which were realised in other parts of Spain. Going through an endless series of sacred images, you will then rise to the second floor, where Mares' study is placed. Before visiting it, though, you will have to a sequence of rooms which will seem eternal. Medieval armaments, fans of all sort, carved pipes, potteries and every sort of bric-a-brac are collected in these rooms, with such an abundance that the visitor will be probably end up developing a sense of oppression. It is with some relief, indeed, that I finally reached the study, pleasantly organised and preserving the original library.
Fortunately enough, the tour for the third floor is considerably shorter than the previous ones (as I was saying, you will be probably end up being fed up with such a heap of knick-knacks). Among the few notable objects of this section, three primitive examples of bicycles. As a matter of fact, it is with some reluctance that I would recommend visiting this museum. Some of the pieces on show are really interesting, but actually they are a small minority out of a huge collection of things. If you are willing to see it, therefore, you will probably have better to go through the exposition quite quickly, devoting some time only to the objects which are really worth seeing.
