Happening to be strolling at the end of the Rambla, I spotted this interesting museum and dropped in almost accidentally. At the end of my visit, though, I found I had learnt some interesting things about the maritime history of Barcelona. In addition to this, I had the chance of admiring a really fine building, the ancient Reials Drassanes (royal shipyards), dating back to the 14th century. And the building, indeed, is probably the most interesting part of the visit: with its wide spans and the Gothic style facade, it is an extraordinary example of medieval architecture and a solid evidence of a time when Barcelona had most of the Mediterranean sea under its control.
Going in order, the museum is located near the Mirador de Colon, just a few metres far from the sea, whose waves originally brushed against the facade of the building. It is possible to visit it at a cost of just 2,50 Euros, and free entrance is offered on Sundays. The tour for the museum will not take you long, probably just half an hour, but you will probably find it quite to your taste. Indeed, apart from an introductory room, showing a few panels about the history and development of the port, you will soon enter the spectacular building once housing the Drassanes. Of course, no more ships are built year, but on the other hand it is possible to find some interesting reconstructions. The most stunning of them is doubtlessly the royal admiral ship which took part into the historical battle of Lepant. Setting off from Barcelona under the guide of king John of Austria, the ship (or rather its original version) was at the head of the fleet which defeated the Turks.
Besides, it is also possible to see a series of models representing the various kinds of boats typically used in Spain. Moreover, a series of nautical objects (old maps, pictures, scale models, helms and sails ) is organised into an interesting exposition, which will conclude your visit. But as I have said before, it is also fascinating to appreciate the building, which preserves most of the original structure (just the ceiling has been reconstructed, mainly due to the damage it suffered during the Civil War).
