Eat modern portuguese!

Portuguese cuisine is very traditional, but it can also be modern and cool! Mercado da Ribeira is proof of that! Also known as Time Out Market, the place was renovated to become a gastronomic experience in Lisbon.

It used to me a municipal market where farmers, fisherman and buttlers would sell their products. Since 2014 it became also a place for enjoying portuguese dishes and drinks in a cool scenery.

Mercado da Ribeira mixes the tradition to the modern age keeping its more than 100 years old history and adapting it to the millenium age. The newest part has big tables in the middle and bars, and little grab and go restaurants on the surrounding, so you can get your food and sit enjoying the environment.

The food stores sells lots of different foods, most of them portuguese - with wine, fish, seafood, olives, cheese and ham as you please! I reccomend eating traditionally: codfish and wine!

For dessert there are many options as well, including the traditional Pasteis de Nata from Manteigaria. I prefered something less traditional and went for a lemon pie - delicious! But I bet anything would taste good there!

Useful information

You can go to Time Out Market during the day or night - it is open daily from 6 am to 2 am. I prefered going at night so I could enjoy my days in Lisbon visiting the main attractions that weren't open at night.

The market is located in the center of the city, very near Praça do Comercio. The closest subway and train station is Cais do Sodre (just in front of it), so it's a really acessible place.

Also you don't need much money to have a great meal there. Depending on the meal and restaurant you choose, you can eat a main dish, with wine and dessert for 12 euros. Fair price!
