From a Spanish student's point of view...
All of the history behind the Cathedral of Notre Dame, but I want to try and convey to you what it was like for me to see and to discover the interior of the most famous Cathedral in the world, far above many others.
The exterior of Notre Dame Cathedral is very eye-catching, you could almost it's hypnotising, but I think that it's a lot like other European cathedrals on the inside. I'm not saying that it's ugly on the inside, not at all, but rather that maybe the best thing about it is its exterior and the simple fact that you're there to see it. It has a big square, full of tourists 24 hours a day, and a lot of tourists go in and out of the Cathedral, they do ruin it a bit or rather we ruin (I have to include myself as I was there as another tourist) the Cathedral's atmosphere a bit. It's always been a classic place to visit, but it's become a kind of a money making machine and somewhere that everyone wants to visit.
On the other hand, although you simply have to visit Notre Dame, as it's one of the biggest symbols of Paris, you also have to pay your respects to the flagship symbol of the city: the Eiffel Tower, but it's also one of the most popular keyrings (I bought one myself).
You can pay to go up the towers of main facade, but I think if you have spare time when you're visiting Paris, going up the towers and trying to find the hunchback of Notre Dame is is great idea, people say he lives up there near the bell tower. Another of the key "Christian sights" in the city is the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris (Sacré-Cœur), but I've already written another post telling you all about it.
You have to visit the Notre Dame Cathedral no matter what!
