Fountain in the Plaza de Armas

To speak of a historical center is also to realise that many wonderful monuments exist there: their beauty makes up many of the points of interest today, and one of them is, without a doubt, an icon of the city of Lima.

There, located in the center of the Plaza de Armas de Lima is our incredible fountain that, in order to understand its presence, you have to understand a little of its history... So, I will tell you, dear friends, that originally the first pool was not like this one, but another, much simpler version.

The facts

The fountain that we see today in the Plaza de Armas dates from the year of 1651. It was inaugurated during the government of Viceroy García Sarmiento de Sotomayor.

Something that will call your attention when you come to visit it, is that there is an angel at the top that is popularly known as the Angel of Fame, who can be found looking at our monumental Government Palace of Peru.

Something curious that I have to tell you about this fountain is that, although it was built in the seventeenth century, the Angel I mentioned that is crowning its high part was broken involuntarily in 1900 during some maintenance work, so today it looks like a replica of the original.

Keep in mind that...

If you come during the night you will find it illuminated as a part of the ornament that can be appreciated today in the Plaza de Armas. On the other hand, there is a type of gargoyle at each end from where they produce water. Finally, take into account only that it is prohibited to touch the fountain! This is easily noticed, since you will be able to see that it has a barrier with vases of plants at the ends and a chain that protects it, unless some child gets under it, which usually happens from time to time until a guard comes over and has to tell them to move away from there!
