A true discovery!
If you want to find a bar with a good atmosphere, attentive staff (even despite the number of customers), and dishes which are at once reasonably-priced, wholesome, and appetising, then get yourself down to La Descubierta.
To put it simply, it's a tapas bar which also serves small beers and wines, with traditional decoration: casks, tables, and wooden stools with glass tops.
With every drink you order you'll get a tapa (a small serving of food), from montaditos (small sandwiches) to small portions of paella, depending on the day. The best thing is to order a full-size portion, such as of typical Madrid-style huevos rotos (fried eggs with ham, peppers, and potatoes). They are served on ceramic dishes and the size is perfect for sharing between two.
Other great options are the croquettes or the various types of toasts, especially the one which carries the restaurant's name: LA DESCUBIERTA, with ham, tomato, and pepper. They also have toasts with Iberian ham, scrambled eggs, or prawns. They are all delicious!
Every time I go there I order the cheesecake for dessert, I'm such a big fan! It has such a smooth and well-rounded flavour. Then, a little glass of something, and after that a shot to help the food go down, on the house. A foolproof option if you're in the city centre!
