HOME-SICK | CONGEE x BREADSTICK

Published by flag- Oat Sitalasai — 9 years ago

Now this one goes out to all those from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand (represent), Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia.. and other countries that thoroughly enjoy a nice, big, warm bowl of rice congee.

The place to go is in Chinatown, and it's called "Superbowl". This is going to be a big claim, but I am confident to say that they serve up the best bowl of congee in Sydney.

First thing first, it's delicious. Secondly, it's massive. Thirdly, it's great alone with a bit of soy sauce, or that plus some breadsticks - in which I won't attempt to write its Chinese name. But there are some pictures below that I took for a clearer illustration!

I'm from Thailand and congee is a staple dish we Thais enjoy for breakfast. While I was in Sydney, I never had it for breakfast - rather I always had it for supper. This is another great thing about Superbowl. They open until late, very very late. They whip up congees until the AM

It's a great place for a bowl of congee even late at night. If I'm not mistaken, a bowl of chicken fillet congee, which was what I always ordered, falls around $8.90. I would have it with breadsticks, which would go for another $2 roughly.. I need to be confirmed on the pricing. Just over $11 for congee and breadsticks, sounds like a good deal to me.

However, I would not recommend ordering other dishes from here as:

1. The menu is quite expensive.

2. There are cheaper alternatives for decent Chinese food - they're a bit hard to find in the city, but a lot easier to find further out in the suburbs.

I also feel like I should mention this: only go to the restaurant for the food (congee + breadstick) and do not expect much from the service end. I had a few bad experiences with the service, but good thing my stomach was satisfied by the food. If you do go quite late at night, there is a chance that they will not accept payment by card, even if it's within the value that would usually be accepted. I assume that this is because they have already closed their account and turned off their card machine for the day, so they would rather receive cash. Anyway, that's just something you could expect.

While you could enjoy a delicious, warm bowl of congee here at Superbowl, you may also benefit from ordering a take away here. A lot of places in the city tend to decrease the portion size if you choose to order the dish as take away. Luckily, Superbowl doesn't take advantage of their customers this way. If you would like to bring back a hot bowl of congee for the cooler months and enjoy this delicacy at the comfort of your home, you're more than welcome to!

If you did spend your childhood munching away a bowl of congee with some breadsticks, definitely give Superbowl a try!
