Here’s another super positive recommendation for the city of Sydney. This time, I would like to discuss my superb visits at “Lowenbrau Keller” which is located towards The Rocks. This restaurant/bar is an excellent place for some really good drinks - specially good beer - and really really friggin awesome food.
I think it’s fair to say that this place has been one of the most consistent restaurant in the city for a good budget. It is not a cheap place to eat, but it’s sure worth every single cent. I usually go there for a meal and a beer, but it is also a cool place for a drink and a pretzel.
If your stomach is really empty and you’re craving for a meat intake, I would definitely recommend going to Lowenbrau Keller. Here, you could order from a huge selection of German dishes, which are all quite meaty and rich. I usually go for the Crispy Pork Knuckle. It’s the bomb. It’s the best. It’s too good. And by the end, it makes me promise myself to not order it again. The portion is massive. The fat is full of flavors. The skin is so super crispy. The meat is so juicy and tender you could cut through with minimal effort. It’s just perfect for my meat craving. It’s a super hardcore dish that is good in every single bite. For all the meat we appreciate, it also comes with a bit of veggies. Just a bit. Enough so you could feel a bit healthier. To soak up the deliciousness, order some beer. Any of them will do, but I personally enjoy either the Lowenbrau Original or the one with the addition of Mango Juice, not sure what the technical term for that is.
I really sold the Pork Knuckle dish I think, but there are also other great dishes to try. For instance, if you’re not feeling too adventurous to take on the full portion of the Pork Knuckle, you could share a platter with another friend, with the delicious and diverse Sharing Dish which has other awesome tasting dishes like sausages, schnitzel, pork belly and some traditional sauerkraut (there’s a lot more to it!). I also enjoyed ordering the gigantic chicken schnitzel with mushroom sauce. It was very simple and perfectly defines the meaning of simple pleasure.
If you do go there for a drink and some snacks, you could do some good but ordering the house baked pretzel. Other than that, I’ve heard that salt and pepper squid is also really good, and not to mention their platter of slices sausages, cheese and cured meats. You basically get a very European-feel here, with delicious food.
If you do go there for a special occasion, be sure to inform them! You may be lucky to get a surprise or maybe a bit of free booze. Who knows, anything could happen. We went there once for a friend’s birthday and they treated our big group very well.
The ambience is superb. There’s usually live music with Germans playing their awesome instruments and singing along. There are also games and activities that you could partake during your evening there. One I remember vividly is the beer drinking competition. Very appropriate for a German restaurant I would say. The waiters and waitresses sport traditional German costumes. It feels as if you’re in German or that everyday is a celebration of Oktoberfest.
They do take table reservations which helps a lot. They do get super busy as the restaurant is in a good location and a lot of people simply do just walk in. One thing I must inform you is that, they do have checks for ID. This is because they have a bar inside that serves different types of alcohol, so like any other bar in Sydney, you need to bring your ID to get in. Other than that, no problem! You could either be seated inside the restaurant, or you may fancy the outdoor terrace, which consists of long wooden tables that you get to share with your fellow neighbors.
I would highly recommend Lowenbrau Keller for all the aspects I’ve mentioned, from food to drinks, to ambience and the great great value you pay for. Like other awesome eating places in Sydney, demand is very high. So high that they have opened in other locations! They do have sister properties that would serve more or less the same food and drinks. Off the top of my head there’s one in the middle of the CBD and one in Manly just at the Ferry Stop. For more information, check out there page here for the latest events, offers, menu and of course, the location and phone number so you could call to make a reservation now!
