MS. G's
I have a feeling that I'm on a winning streak of food related posts so I will keep this up while I still have the tempo. This time, we're still in Sydney, but will be heading the spot in the city never discussed of before. I usually don't go around this area, but for those curious, we're taking a trip to a restaurant in Potts Point!
Right, I would like to share with you, and highly recommend, that you find time to head over to Ms. G's for dinner. The restaurant is located in Potts Points, which is basically within minutes from the massive Coca Cola Sign at Kings Cross. The closest train station that you could get off from is King Cross Station, and there are numerous buses that right pass this area too. Once you're in and around the area, the restaurant is located at 155 Victoria Street.
Ms. G's an Asian-inspired restaurant with a modern, somewhat Australia twist. Restaurant that serves cuisine with a twist is so common these days, but those that do it well is often hard to find. Like I said, Ms. G's serves up Asian cuisine that has been modified and thoroughly thought through. The interior of the restaurant is super hip and super cool. It has a bar vibe to it, and the decors give you reasons to believe that this place will make some modern Asian food. I'm positive that you'll be able to get a lot of photos just in and around the restaurant on its own.
Alright, let's talk about some of their delicious options on the menu. The items that I could personally recommend to you guys are the mini banh minh rolls and ocean trout tostada with green papaya, guacamole and red, thai-styled nahm jim. If you just wait a few more lines, you will be able to see a photo I took of the mini banh minhs. If you read my previous post in regards to Sydney fast foods, I talked about these Vietnamese sandwiches. That's exactly what they are, but here, they're transformed into what we could easily recognise as a mini burger, or a slider. You could either choose pork or chicken for you mini banh minhs. We went for the pork option which was delicious pork belly and pickled veggies. They were just absolutely delicious and were a fantastic start to our meal. Otherwise, you could also for a mini salad with ocean trout. I like this one because as a Thai, we love our papaya salad and namh jim sauce, and as a foreigner, I also love some fish like trout with some guacamole. It's a good combo of east meets west because us Asians barely use avocado, let alone for savoury dish.
Moving on nicely to our main course. You could pick for a decent-sized menu as they are divided into two parts: salads and smaller plates vs. larger. So basically, I mentioned way above that it has a chill, bar vibe inside the restaurant. Their smaller plates menu makes it perfect to order a bit of everything to share on your table. There is nothing better than good friends and family sharing good food over good beverages, of course, at the comfort of a restaurant where you don't have to do the washings later! Like every good restaurant, they do look to change their menus every once in a while to bring something new and exciting to the market. In saying this, I am not very familiar with they're currently offering for their salads and smaller plates. Unfortunately, the same goes for their larger menu as well. One thing I could confirm though, is that the dish under the name of bo ssam, which is 'crispy pork hock with apple kimchi, 5 flavour sauce, herbs and lettuce' has been on the menu for a while. It's actually the only item on the larger menu that I recognise, because I clearly remember that we were debating as to whether or not we should get it. We ended up ordering something else, like the super juicy and crispy Bangkok Fried Chicken with a clear sweet and chilli sauce, and a unique, either Malaysian or Singaporean fried prawns dish with butter, garlic and coconut which was absolutely out of this world.
Oh, make sure that you save room for dessert. This place takes their food and drinks really seriously and does an excellent job all the way from appetisers to desserts. To really conclude the meal with a BANG, you really have to get Stoner's Delight Part 3. I think when I was there, it was something before part 3, so this one is like a revised and edited version. I don't think it's for the better or for the worse, since they're just playing with different ingredients which I'm sure will contribute to a good dessert. The presentation of the dish looks like a mess at first, but you can really see everything. Or maybe this is how a stoned person would see the dish, but this claim is a bit inappropriate as we're encouraged to present something useful to the society...
So for the current variation, you get all the deliciousness from 'doughnut ice cream, peanut dulce de leche, peanut & pretzel brittle, crispy bacon, mars bar brownie, passionfruit curd, potato chips and deep fried nutella. If you're into foodporn or foodcoma or calories or fat or diet-what-diet, they this is it. This is the real deal. The last version also has crispy bacon, some sort of ice cream, fried mars bar or twix or snickers and something really bad (for your beach body!). There is no other way to go about this dessert. You just have to get a bit of everything and eat it super slowly to make the person next to you jealous. It's one of the most unique desserts I've ever had and I still remember it vividly until today. Let me stop here before I go to the supermarket, buy all the components, and I attempt to reconstruct this one in my own kitchen.
So we had a fantastic meal from start to finish and a bottle of beer. I think it calculated to just under $30 per person for a really good meal. It's not at all a cheap place to eat, but you must understand that we're now stepping to a 'casual-fine dining' territory for foods now. It's impossible to find a foodporn or hipster kind of cafe or bistro that would make cheap food. You must be willing to pay, but I ensure you, that you will get on heck of an experience from the dollars you spend. Every penny was worth it for the quality of the food, the funm the atmosphere, and of course, the service of the restaurant team.
The service here is also really good. I can't really flaw anything they did. The staffs are super friendly and they make you feel at ease. Everything was going at a good pace and team members were stressless. The service definitely made up for a chill environment.
The restaurant has won various prizes in recent times, with the most impressive in my opinion being the One Hat prize, awarded by the much respected, Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide Awards. This honour, by the way, has been given to Ms. G's every single year, since 2012. The one for 2015 has yet to come out, but the fact that this restaurant has gained ranks and respect for the past three years clearly show that they know what they're doing. With the direction the restaurant is heading, I have no doubt that they're just better and better and the best is yet to come.
Just on one last, final note, I would like to also mention that Ms. G's is a part of a bigger chain of restaurants. The brand is called Merivale and they have a really well-known club - which is the BEST club to go to in my opinion - called Ivy / Pacha as well as El Loco, a small Mexican eating/drinking place I talked about months ago. Be sure to check out other things they're up to just via a click on their website right below, and I must repeat again, you must absolutely and definitely try this place, or prepare to hear all the good things about it from the third person!!
