Comarca de Guadix – Gorafe

Published by flag-ro Patricia Ioana — 6 years ago

Gorafe is the ideal destination for those of you who wish to travel back to the past. This village boasts the greatest concentration of dolmens in Spain and part of Europe. There are 10 necropolises spread around the village, which has been populated since the prehistory and has always been a natural border among surrounding civilization.

You cannot only enjoy tours to these 198 dolmens, but also other attractions.

One of the most important ones is a group of around 300 cave houses in the nearby settlement called Los Algarves, which were refugees in the past but now become one of the main touristic attractions in the village. Many of these particular houses make up the legacy of Los Algarves, the village of the Almohads, a Muslim Dynasty that conquered the South of Spain in the 12th century.

More recent but not less important is the parish church Nuestra Señora de la Anunciación. Although it has been restored several times, the church was built in Mudejar style, combining both Islamic Moorish and Christian architectural styles cultures.

Abrupt elevations of the land give shape to the village, that ends in a gorge surrounded by stone walls. This area is known as Los Colorados, as it is similar to the American Grand Canyon, called Cañón del Colorado in Spanish.

You can also enjoy many different outdoor activities in contact with nature, such as quad routes in the mountains and trekking, as well as walks in the area.

Local kitchen: homemade stews and cured pork products stand out in the local cuisine.

Patron saint celebrations take place in August, but there is another festivity, the day of San Marcos, when blessed ring-shaped bread is given out. In addition, the Arch Day takes place on Easter Sunday, when locals build an arch with branches and flowers for the traditional procession.

Gorafe is almost 59 miles (94 km) away from Granada city. Take the A-92 road to Guadix, and then the A-92N until you arrive to the diversion exit to Gorafe.
