Nagyi palacsintázója

Nagyi palacsintázója or Granny’s pancake house is for sure the sweetest place I found in Budapest. After a walk in the city my friend and I stopped there for one big tasty dessert.

The pancake house has a number of locations in Budapest, but the one we went to and the most popular is the one on Batthyány Square, just opposite the Parliament.

The place is not very spacious, more like the fast-food type, meaning that there are no waiters and customers have to stay in line to order at the counter. Given the small space, usually there is a long line, but the service is really quick. Also sometimes it can get really crowded as it was in the evening we were there, when the place was filled with clients, so it can be difficult to find a table and maybe even become a bit uncomfortable. Upstairs there are some window seats that offer a great view. And also the restaurant has a few tables outside so if the weather is good you can enjoy both the pancakes as the view over the Parliament. Overall the place has a casual ambiance and more importantly is open non-stop.

The menu is displayed on the wall, at the entrance as well as next to the counter. Important to mention is that is was in Hungarian only and since my friend speaks the language we had no problem in choosing what we wanted and ordering. I’m not sure if English menus are available. Better ask, they might have them behind the counter!

The menu offers a variety of pancakes both savoury and sweet. Some examples of the fillings are:

• Hungarian stew,
• mushrooms,
• cheese,
• spinach,
• Nutella,
• jam and many others.

The prices are between 160 – 680 ft (or 0. 5 – 2. 5 euro). Besides the pancakes, different kinds of drinks are served.

We chose the layered pancake so we got this huge piece of pancake cake, having somewhere between 10 and 15 layers, filled with chocolate pudding, walnuts and jam and topped with whipped cream, sprinkles and cherries.
