Time for a snack? Xurros!

Published by flag-it Emanuele Benetti — 5 years ago

Having lived for three months in Spain without even trying churros would have been really strange. Therefore, as the end of my first term as a Comenius assistant is approaching quickly, I decided it was high time to trying this sweet specialty. Even more so that, believe it or not, a brand new "xurreria" has just been opened in my neighbourhood, just a couple of minutes walking from my house. How was it? Well, you can easily judge from the pictures...

As far as I am concerned, Xurreria La Tassa in Vilanova i la Geltrù has been a pleasant discovery Before going on, however, it could be a good idea to explain what churros ("xurros" in Catalan) are. This kind of sweet snack, very popular in Spain, consists in a few pieces of batter, made of flour, salt and sugar, which after being fried for a minute or so are normally eaten with hot chocolate. Indeed, they are so popular that the Spanish idiomatic expression to say that a product is having a huge success of sales (like Sell like hot cakes in English) is Venderse como churros.

Now, to say the truth churros are very commonly sold in street stalls and, therefore, eaten during a mid-afternoon walk. Although, it is a universal truth that the best way to appreciate them fully is tasting them with hot chocolate, as I was saying. For that reason I went to the above-mentioned "xurreria", which despite having opened just one month ago has apparently already made itself a name in Vilanova i la Geltrù. Fortunately, there was no disappointment in store: both the churros and the chocolate were delicious.

I would definitely recommend the place, then, for a sweet breakfast but also for a snack at any hour, as both cold and warm sandwiches are also available. Besides the prices, which are perfectly fine (1. 5 euro for an abundant portion of churros, 3 euro for churros and hot chocolate), another reason which could give the place an edge is that, unlike many other bars or cafeterias, it is not located on the Rambla Principal. In this way, you will not need a 15-minutes walk if you do not live in the city centre, as it is my case.

Ora di merenda? Xurros

Published by flag-it Emanuele Benetti — 5 years ago

Come è andata? Beh... potete facilmente giudicare dalle foto!
