Usually student life goes hand in hand with a student budget, which happens to be - if we're honest - not a lot. But don’t worry, we've all been there! You’ll be perfectly fine in Bydgoszcz, as it’s a cheap city in a cheap country - if you use euros or pounds in your everyday life, you and your finances should be more than ok! Here are some tips on how to save money whilst living in Bydgoszcz on a student budget.

Student card

You will get your student card from your university. You should get all necessary information from the International Office. With the student card you have access to several discounts in various places: 50% discount on trains and city buses/trams, student ticket prices at the cinema, theatre, opera. You can also get cheaper beer and drink prices, as well as free entrance to some clubs.

Other student cards - internationally recognized and better known worldwide - are EURO26 and the ISIC card. These two cards can give you similar discounts to your student card from university. Although the university card will be much more known in Bydgoszcz and that’s what will work best for you during your time there.

Tourist card BIT

There is also a tourist card called Karta BIT. This discount card costs 25 PLN and can be bought from a few places in the Old Town in Bydgoszcz, as well as in Inowroclaw and Toruń, because - here is where it gets even better than you might thought - this card works for the three biggest cities in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. The karta BIT gives you lots of discounts in places such as restaurants, hotels, shops etc. The list of program partners can be found on this website (Polish only).

Student libraries

A very important place for students in every city is the library. By making use of libraries you can avoid buying books for yourself. Every university in Bydgoszcz has its own library, but to use them you have to be a student of that university (you have to show your student card when you apply for a library card). The main library of Kazimierz Wielki University is located in the city centre (Szymanowskiego Street) - it’s a modern building with a big common room designated for students. The main library of UTP University of Science and Technology is located in the Fordon neighbourhood. In addition to this we have public city libraries, the Bydgoszcz Main Library is located at the Old Market Square.
