Eating in a place that you think you can't afford... but you can!

This magnificent restaurant is located in Strasbourg's la Petite France; this area being considered a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1988.

From the outside, it resembles another charming cottage that can be found in the area or otherwise, a restaurant of luxury, in which it would never have occurred to us to enter. It can be admired from the outside as well as to take some photos of ourselves.

However this place is affordable for nearly all budgets. You can eat a traditional small 'Tarte Flambée' for less than €8, or a big one for less than €10. I have to say that the small size is good for one person. In Strasbourg, it's free for water in the restaurants in case you didn't know!

You can also try many other Alsatian dishes at an average quality for around 15 or 20 euros, considering that it's worth it more for the place than the food in my opinion. However, the Tartes Flambées are delicious. If you want you can also order a dessert for around €6, which is somewhat expensive but I recommend trying a French Crème Brûlée, although you'll have to share it. You only live once. =)

The Restaurant menu is divided up into:

  • Alsatian aperitifs
  • Tartes Flambées
  • Starters and salads
  • Small Alsatian plates
  • Suggestions
  • Daily fixed menu
  • Meat
  • Cheese
  • Desserts
  • Wine and beer
  • Coffee and digestifs

On the other hand, although the best thing about the restaurant is the exterior façade, the interior is very welcoming and pretty. It's quite rustic but with a special touch. It has two floors and the tables next to the windows are best as they have views of one of the canals which runs through the Petite France although if the windows are closed, it isn't a complete view.

The service would be the negative part about the restaurant. I had a positive experience with one of the waiters and another, negative; as well as an anecdote that subtracted several points but the service isn't usually why I go to restaurants. The first waiter, who attended to me there, was very nice and polite. Nothing stood out to me the following times, apart from in my last visit to Strasbourg when I went to eat there with a friend and the waiter was impolite and not very preoccupied with us. He saw that we didn't order a main course and to drink, it was free water and we didn't interest them as clients. However, I believe everyone has to be treated equally regardless of what they order, as they can lose a future client. The anecdote I told made me think back to when we were in the restaurant entrance from 2 until 2. 25, waiting to enter because a friend had to sort out an issue on the phone; when we went to enter, they were going to give us a table but the manager told us no, that the kitchen was now closed and we left; and thanks to my friend who understands French, it turns out the waitress told the manager that we had been in the door for half an hour and that it was now too late. In regards to the other aspects of the service, like the time taken to serve the food, etc., my experience there is average.

So if you want to eat some place special or surprise your friends or visitors here, you have an option (if you're not bothered about the courtesy of the service, of course).
