This restaurant is located in the historic quarter of Strasbourg, known as Petite France, in the Ponts Couverts area, very close to the Barrage Vauban [Vauban Dam].
I recommend that you ask to be seated on the restaurant's terrace that overlooks one of the many canals in Strasbourg, where you can enjoy some amazing views of the city with the cathedral forming part of the backdrop whilst you eat your meal. I honestly think that this terrace is very charming.
One night, we ate dinner inside the restaurant because it was quite cold out, and I have to say that it is very well-decorated - elegant, yet quite modest in size.
Aside from this, the food itself is very good and the restaurant offers a wide variety of dishes. The menu is comprised of:
- Appetisers
- Starters
- Pizzas
- Alsatian specialities
- Pastas and risottos
- Meat and fish
- Desserts
- Soft drinks, wines, coffees and beers
- Children's menu and menus of the day
I was lucky enough to be able to try tarte flambée, cordon bleu and spaghetti carbonara. I don't know which one I liked the most... I suppose that it was probably the cordon bleu because it's a typical French dish and I was very excited to try it. At first, it looks like a San Jacobo, but unlike the Spanish version, the ham and cheese are actually stuffed inside a chicken breast.
The prices are average to bordering slightly expensive, but I cannot say that it is a cheap restaurant. I think that the cordon bleu cost between 15€ and 20€ (with a side included), the spaghetti was around 10€, and the tarte flambée was just under 10€. On a more positive note, at least the water is free at restaurants here in Strasbourg. In terms of deciding what to eat, we ended up ordering a couple of dishes to share amongst us all, which meant that we could try several things without spending an absolute fortune. We ordered the cheapest things, but there were several other dishes that looked really good.
Marco Polo is a very good restaurant if you want to surprise your relatives, visitors, friends or significant others. But, I would say that you should go on a sunny day or one when it's not too cold because the best thing about coming here is dining out on the terrace. After your meal, you can take advantage of the rest of the day by having a wander around the surrounding area.
