The beer success
While being in Copenhagen, I have decided that it is a must to visit Carlsberg Old Brewery Museum and to explore how it all started. To tell the truth, the museum is quite challenging to find, it is located a bit outside of the center of the city so you definitely need to take the bus (I heard some people walked there, but it is not so entertaining). Make sure you know exactly where to go. Local people usually have no idea where the Brewery is located...
When you finally come there, go straight to the ticket office. The price for the entrance is about 8 euros per person. You also get vouchers for 2 free drinks. If you're lucky and you come on time, you can manage to see the guided tour which should be very interesting. Unfortunately, I came too early. The guided tour starts at 14 and 16 pm. You explore the souvenir shop which is indeed big and has everything with Carlsberg label, from underwear to cooking tools. The prices are quite high, however, it might be a good place to search for unique souvenirs.
After that you walk to the actual museum. The museum gets 3 out 5 points because I wouldn't call it totally entertaining. They tried to provide all the information, from the history of Carlsberg to the history of beer. The museum has 3 different floors. After it you walk to the actual old brewery to discover historic machines and equipment.
For me the most entertaining part was stables. It is the first place I saw where the stables were with real horses. If you're careful, you can try to touch them. I think it is the best part of the whole museum tour.
The last part is, of course, degustation. With 2 vouchers you can get beer and soft drinks. I strongly advice to try the beer which is rare and you might not find it in your country. After beers, you get pretty happy with the life and leave the place with the feeling of full satisfaction.
The following pluses can be seen:
- If you have a CopenCard you get the entrance for free. :)
- It is a good way to try unique beers.
- Still the museum gives you an understanding of the beer industry.
There might be some concerns as well:
- If it is cold outside, a beer doesn't sound as a good idea.
- The place is pretty small, you manage to see everything within half an hour.
- Food is expensive.
- If you expect to see the real brewery (modern one), you won't. I am even not sure if it is in the same place as the old one.
My final words is that though this place is overrated, it is still nice to visit (especially if you have a CopenCard).
