Blog: Iran, how much do you really know?

Okay since we have settled that I'm diversifying my blog topics, I thought maybe I should start on sharing some of my all-time favorite recipes. These recipes all belong to the category of the broke and miserable student category. No but jokes aside, they are suitable for students like us, that either have no time nor no energy to waste cooking.

You ever get that feeling like you need to have some soup, but a soup is too much effort and it takes like 40 minutes to get ready? Or like it's a cold winter day like today and you need something warm, not a warm drink but something more filling. Well then this recipe is perfect for you, we don’t really have this in English, but Persians eat it a lot, I mean a lot, a lot. I remember how as a kid I used to always have this, I loved it. It’s called Fereni and it is the easiest thing you will ever make in your life. It actually has only three main ingredients, yes that’s right, only 3 main ingredients and it takes less than 20 minutes to get ready.

Main ingredients (For 2 people):

  • Milk: 2 and half cups
  • Rice flour: 2 full spoons
  • Sugar: 2-3 full spoons

Optional ingredients:

  • Coconut powder: 1 spoon
  • Rose water: 1 tea spoon

Now let’s get to it, use a pot or a large pan, pour the milk into it, I actually made mine twice the actual ingredient because well I knew my whole family would want a bit so. I poured the milk in the pot, turned on the stove, put the pot on it, I slowly added the rice flour, okay rice flour is super cheap to buy, and almost all super markets have it, you need to pour it slowly to avoid it from becoming curdles. You need to continuously stir the milk until it heats up, and then put it on medium heat, add the sugar and keep on stirring.

You need to just mix and stir the milk, flour and sugar mixture for about 10-15 minutes, after that where it needs to become a little thicker, if it was still not thick, add another small spoon of flour to it and stir some more. Just make sure to not add too much flour to it because it tastes weird, just be patient with it, till it becomes thick enough and then you are pretty much done, add some coconut powder or rose water to it, for additional taste, they are totally optional, no need to add them if you don’t have any. And you are pretty much done.

This tastes so good and yet it is too simple to make, as long as you have all the ingredients it shouldn’t take more than 20-25 minutes to make it. I like this especially on winter afternoons when you snuggle with a good movie and you have something warm and tasty to have.

Okay so this is my first recipe ever so I hope you enjoy it, there are more coming up soon.
