My Experience in Querétaro, Mexico. By Jordi.
What is it like to live in Querétaro? Would you reccommend it? How is it?
Querétaro is a city with the best quality of life in the whole of Mexico, therefore you do not need to worry. It is a rapidly growing city, maybe with the highest growth rate of the country, both economy-wise and population. It is a "safe" city in comparison to the others and it is quite clean as well. I have lived here almost all my life and I could not live anywhere else. I reccommend it completely.
What is the student life like in Querétaro?
It all depends on the University where you want to study: Anahuac, UAQ, Tec de Monterrey, ITQ, etc. Some places are really fresh and others not so much. Querétaro is not a student city and normally students from the different Universities don't really spend time together.
How much does it cost to live in Querétaro?
As I have spent almost all my life here, to me the prices seem normal, but in compared to Germany, where I spent a couple of years, it is a lot cheaper to live in Querétaro. The food, the rent, light, gas and water is all a lot cheaper than in Europe. However, Querétaro is relatively expensive compared to other cities like Puebla, Morelia, etc.
The expensive part in Querétaro, and all of Mexico in fact, is the Inter-State travel. If you want to visit another state nearby you have to pay the tollbooths in each mototrway, the buses are not too expensive but they take so much longer and the plane is a lot more expensive than those in Europe.
Did it cost you to find accommodation in Querétaro? Do you have any advice?
I have a house, so no!
But I have foreign friends who live close to Tec and the rent depends on the apartment they have, it can be between $3, 000 to $6, 000 a month, with bills included.
The best thing to do is to get a shared apartment, because then the bills go down quite a lot.
What is the food like? Do you have any favourite dishes?
Querétaro has many delicious traditional foods, however I prefer the food from Puebla and Michoacana. If you're new in Mexico, you must try different foods from other countries. Don't forget tacos, stews, pozole, enchiladas from Querétaro, pambazos and cornflower with tamales. Just like the tacos, they are rich, cheap and there is a great variety of them, choose the one you like the most.
Which places do you reccommend to visit?
The centre of town in very beautiful, I reccommend taking a tour on the tram to the centre, as it passes through the streets with mansions, and the tour guide explains who lived there (historical figures) and a few historical facts. Equally, I would reccommend "La Noche de Leyendas", the night of legends, in the centre, you go by foot and you will be told some historical facts and a few terrifying stories.
If you walk around by yourself, I would also reccommend to go to the centre. It is quite comfortable to go through and during the evenings there are loads of bars on the 5th of May flowing from the alleys from the centre.
And to eat? Can you tell us some of your favorite places?
Every typical local restaurant in the centre. I reccommend Acueducto, República and a little cut off there is the Plaza Nautica, restaurants and bars by a dam, which is great both day and night. In the Avenida Bernardo Quintana there are also loads of restaurants.
Where do you reccommend to go out in Querétaro?
In the centre, take a shot of mezcal in each bar in the centre.
Plaza Nautica with loads of bars.
Or you can opt for going to a cavern like Tesla, Kaah, Rattle, Silvana, etc.
Do you have any advice for future students coming to study at Querétaro?
Get to know all that Mexico offers, as well as the nature which is both beautiful and diverse.
