Fruity (Leeds Student Union)

If you’re looking for a cheesy night to really let loose and scream Taylor Swift at the top of your lungs, Fruity is the place for you. It is a massively cheesy night which always ends with a rendition of Mr Brightside. Grab a VK and your £3 ticket in advance online and enjoy.

Club Mission

Where: 8 Heaton's Ct, Leeds LS1 4LJ

When: Thursday nights

Club Mission is said to be the UK’s number one house venue, fit with strobe lighting, big DJ’s and reasonably priced tickets. It has a heated terrace area too.

Beaverworks

Where: 36 Whitehouse St, Hunslet, Leeds LS10 1AD

When: Selected events

Beaverworks is one of the coolest clubs in Leeds. Fact. It is set further away, so you will have to get a taxi as it is located in an industrial warehouse. It hosts some big nights such as Cirque du Soul and will definitely be a night to remember.

Canal Mills

Where: Brandon Street, Leeds LS12 2EB

Situated in a former mill outside the city centre, like Beaverworks it is also known for its stand-out big event nights, which feature balloon drops, bouncy castles and confetti cannons!

The HiFi Club

Where and when:The Mixtape project on Tuesdays

It’s a pretty small venue which plays lots of indie music, noughties disco songs and some RnB.

Bars in Leeds

Slug and Lettuce

Where:14 Park Row, LS1 5HU

Slug and Lettuce is a popular bar chain in the UK, mainly due to its extensive and reasonably priced cocktail menu. Its star menu item is its Pornstair Martini Cocktail tree, which is great for sharing with friends and for the gram!

It also has a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, however it is advised to book at peak times as it can get extremely busy.

Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen

Where: Cross Belgrave St, Leeds LS2 8JP

Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen is a cool and trendy place in Leeds which boasts three floors and a rooftop terrace which is jam-packed with students on a sunny day.

They host two Leeds local businesses in their canteen: Dough Boys who serve fresh pizza slices and Patty Smith’s delicious vegan burgers. They also host lots of events such as live gigs and art exhibitions.

Junkyard Golf Club

Where:The Light, The Headrow, Leeds, LS1 8TL

Junkyard Golf Club is a franchise which has recently made its way to Leeds, which revolves around a 9-hole crazy golf course made out of, well, junk. The refreshments are equally as wacky as the course, with cocktails such as the Purple Rain (made out of violet and cream soda and even comes with Parma Violet sweets on top!) and fairground food such as hot-dogs and nachos.

Headrow House

Where: 19a The Headrow, Leeds, LS1 6PU

When: Headrow house is open every day till late evening but times for the restaurant do vary, so why not check out their website?

Located in a formal textile mill, Headrow House houses two roof-terraces which offer views over the Victorian Quarter, a grill restaurant, a beer hall and a live venue.

The Stone Roses Bar

Where: 9 Lower Briggate, Leeds LS1 6ER

When: Thursday to Saturday 10 pm - 6 am

Named after the biggest band from Manchester, the Stone Roses Bars hosts indie-themed nights out on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It is equally popular with the alternative crowd as with those who fancy a night out where you don’t have to get too dressed up.

The Alchemist

Where:Top floor of Trinity Leeds

When:Sunday to Wednesday 10 am - 12 am, Thursday to Saturday 10 am - 1 am

The Alchemist is a super-cool bar in Leeds city-centre which names its cocktails after the elements of the periodic table. It is definitely an insta-worthy spot, with colour-changing cocktails or even ones with smoke! It also offers spectacular views from its rooftop of Leeds, equipped with heaters and blankets.

Cocktails do cost around £8.50 though, so it might be best to have a drink at home first or just stay for one if you are on a student budget.

Viaduct Showbar

Where: Lower Briggate, LS1 6ER

Viaduct is a cabaret show-bar which is a very popular venue with LGBTQ members and their allies. Its hosts include award-winning drag queens and they have various events each week such as their popular Tuesday Karaoke Nights.

Student pubs in Leeds

Terrace

Terrace is a campus pub in Leeds Student Union, whose outdoor terrace is always jam-packed on the rare sunny days in Leeds. Famous for their 2-for-£10 pizzas and their 2-4-1 cocktails, Terrace is the perfect chill spot for you and your friends if you are on a student budget.

Hyde Park Pub

A popular pub in the student area of Hyde Park which boasts outside seating, Hyde Park Pub is great for a chilled evening pint with your friends.

The Dry Dock

The Dry Dock is a pub inside a boat, parked on the grass, right next to the University of Leeds. Just a day in the life in Leeds. It has different deals on everyday, such as “wingsday”, where each chicken wing is only 25 p. It also has pool tables and outdoor seating.

The Library

Don’t let its name deceive you, because this local is none other than a gastro-pub. With delicious food such as halloumi fries and cheap pints, it’s the perfect way to spend a guilt-free evening and keep your parents happy after you say you were stuck at the Library till 3 am.

Old Bar

The Old Bar is a proper English pub, but with student-friendly prices. Popular with students as much after a lecture as for their famous pub quizzes, which take place every Thursday from 8 pm.

They also have a hearty menu, ranging from burgers, burritos or even vegan nachos!

Getting home safely after a night out

Leeds Night bus

The Leeds Student Union runs a Minibus service, which takes students home from the Union in the evenings for just £1. It runs every night in term-time at the following times:

  • Monday to Thursday: Every 30 minutes from 6.30 pm till 1 am

  • Friday: Every 30 minutes from 6.30 pm till 4 am

  • Weekends: Every 30 minutes from 6.30 pm till 1 am.

Another safe way to get home is to travel by Taxi. You have the option of using Leeds City Taxis, Amber Cars or Uber. You can visit their web page to find out more information about the taxis, or read about Amber Cars scheme to keep students’ safe below:

Amber Cars

Amber Cars is a taxi company which has a partnership with the University of Leeds to keep students safe in emergency situations.

If you find yourself in a difficult situation and you don’t have any money or way to get home, Amber Cars will get you home safely. All you have to do is follow the following steps:

  1. Phone Amber Cars on 01132022117 and tell them you are using the University of Leeds Safe Car Scheme

  2. Tell the operator your name, e-mail and University student card number

  3. A car will be sent to your destination as a priority

  4. Show the driver your University student card, and they will take you to your halls, a police station or a hospital.

  5. You will leave your student card with them as payment, which you can then pick up a few days later from the Student Union once you have paid your fare.
