The Climbing Labs

Where: Kirkstall Industrial Parks, Leeds, LS42AZ

Climbing labs offers lots of climbing walls at your disposition, at varying levels of difficulty. Despite being very welcoming to beginners and even offering an adult intro course, they are also one of the only centres in Yorkshire to offer top out climbing; where you can actually climb over the boulder!

You can hire climbing shoes and chalk bags and there are also showers and lockers available.

They also have student Wednesdays where you can climb for just £5.50 and hire your climbing shoes for free! Or if that doesn’t capture your attention, why not go on a Friday where you get a free slice of MOD Pizza on arrival!

Park Run

Where: Woodhouse Moor

For the runners out there, or even if you just want to get out and active, the Park Run is a national event held every Saturday morning at 9.00 am. The one in Leeds takes place in Woodhouse Moor and was actually the first parkrun to take place outside of London!

The Park run consists of a free, times 5k run around the park. It is run by volunteers and it is a great way to get out and active! If you are a bit nervous, Leeds Girls Can run a “couch to 5k” initiative, where girls with no running experience can train together and build up their fitness as part of a team.

It’s also a great way to make friends - after the run some members go and grab a coffee at the Opposite Cafe (which is located opposite the Parkinson building).

The Edge - Leeds Student Gym

Where: University of Leeds campus

The Edge is the University of Leeds’ on-campus, state of the art gym, fit with weights, a 8-lane pool, cardiovascular and resistance machines and a climbing wall.

They also offer over 220 exercise classes per week, ranging from beginner level to Advance, such as Women Only Strength Training, swimfit or yoga.

As of 2020, there are 2 different membership options: Edge club, which grants you access to the gym and pool on weekdays 06:30-11:30 am, and weekends from 7:30-21:00 pm. You can access classes, climbing wall and sports halls at any time; and Edge Premium, where you have access anytime as well as to 70 other university gyms across the UK and a whole other realm of benefits. To find out all of them, visit this website.

Edge Club membership is £22.62 a month or £190 a year, and Edge Premium costs £34.52 a month or £290 a year.

If you are living in University Halls, you get Edge Club gym access for free!

Get out Get Active

This is a student-run initiative which inspires students to explore the Yorkshire countryside, get moving and make new friends all at the same time!

They do activities such as walking trips to beautiful areas in the Yorkshire region, Kayaking for beginners, or even the opportunity to train for a 5k run as part of a group! It is open to all students, no matter what level of fitness you have. Take a look at the Get out Get Active website to find out more...

There’s a great quality of life in Leeds, and it is enjoyed by English and International students alike. If you don’t believe us, take a look at this experience of a Spanish student studying in Leeds!
