The city centre

The city centre is the hub of Leeds, it is where you will find all the biggest businesses, the shops and the thriving nightlife. It is home to the Victorian Quarter and the Financial district.

Financial district

Don’t think that London is the only place that you can go to get your foot into the financial sector. Leeds is the UK’s second centre for baking, is Britain’s fastest growing legal sector and is the second biggest law hub only behind London and the city region employs over 300,000 people.

The Financial District is home to many big financial names, such as Aviva, The Bank of England and Zurich Financial Services.

University of Leeds University Campus - Safe student community

The University of Leeds campus is a safe area with a big community feel in Leeds. It is one of the largest city centre campuses in the UK and comes with a whole host of amenities, such as the Student’s Union, an on-campus supermarket and all of your libraries and lecture buildings close-by.

To live on the University of Leeds campus you will have to apply for halls during the university and you will be randomly allocated a place. Some halls are not on campus and are located in other areas in Leeds.

Little London/ Woodhouse - Student and family neighbourhood

The Little London and Woodhouse area is typically a family area, however there are student halls and houses in the area. It is about a 5 minute walk from campus, making it the nearest residential area to the University.

There is a medium-sized park where students relax in the summer, as well as some small corner-shops and a post office.

Burley - Small and safe student neighbourhood

Burley is a small residential area to the left of Hyde Park, which is often popular with students due to it’s slightly lower rent prices and the fact that it is slightly closer to the University.

It has its own train station, Burley Park train station, which has regular trains running to Leeds City Centre and Headingley. The trains take 2 minutes to Headingly and 5 minutes to the city centre, so it is a lot quicker than driving or taking the bus.

Directly behind the train station, there is a Co-op which is open 24 hours a day and from 12 pm till 6pm on Sundays (as of 2020). This is perfect to fit your food shop into your weird student hours, as well as not having to carry your shopping too far!

Burley is also praised for its proximity to Kirkstall retail park, which hosts a lot of amenities such as Aldi and Asda, Temple Coffee Doughnut and lots of food places like MOD Pizza and Nandos!

Hyde Park - Lively and popular student neighbourhood

Hyde Park is the hub of student life and it is where lots of students choose to live in their second year. It is a 15 minute walk to the University of Leeds, a 20 minute walk to Headingley and a 25 minute walk to the city centre.

Its popularity is due to the sheer amount of pubs and eateries that are in the area.

It is also home to some really cool cultural places, such as Hyde Park Picture House, Hyde Park Pub and Woodhouse Moor.

Headingley - Popular student neighbourhood with cheaper rent

Headingley is a popular student suburb in Leeds, which is very popular with Leeds Beckett students due to its close proximity to their Headingley campus, as well as having slightly cheaper rent.

If you are a sports lover it is a great place to live, since it is home to Headingley Stadium, Headingley Cricket Ground and sports training courts. The high street is loved by students and locals alike for its charity shops, independent cafes and of course its many pubs which feature on the famous Otley Run!
