Warehouse Wednesdays

As you’ll soon find out, in Leeds, Wednesday’s aren’t for wearing pink, they’re for sports. The majority of University sports teams have matches against other universities, then go and celebrate (or down their sorrows) at a club social, which usually ends up with everyone going to a popular Leeds club, The Warehouse for their ‘Mischief’ event.

Usually, everyone goes in various fancy dress costumes straight from the social and everyone would have been drinking since the matches, so it does get pretty rowdy. The playlist is typical club classics and 2010 pop songs and you will definitely bump into a lot of people that you know there.

Be careful, tickets sell out well in advance, although usually, societies have paper tickets that they sell to their members at the social beforehand.

Prices: £2.50 doubles, £1 shots.

The Otley Run - Leeds best pub crawl

A 16 venue, 1.5-mile pub crawl in fancy dress through Leeds, the Otley Run should most definitely be on your bucket list. Starting at Woodies Craft Ale House in Headingley and ending at the Dry Dock next to campus, the aim is to have a drink at every bar and still manage to keep it together for a night out at Fruity at the end of it.

Here’s our definitive guide on how to ace the Otley run:

Stick to the route

It doesn’t count if you pre till 10 then join your mates at the pub closest to your house. The route is as follows: Woodies Craft Ale House, The Three Horseshoes, New Inn, The Headingley Taps, The Box, Skyrack, The Original Oak, Hyde Park Pub, The Library, The Pack Horse, Eldon, The Fenton, Strawbs and The Dry Dock.

Wear fancy dress

Fancy dress is a huge part of the Otley Run. Usually every coordinates with the club or group of friends that they have gone out with around a theme. As well as being very funny to stumble across Leeds in a crazy costume, it is also very helpful for spotting your friends in a crowded pub.

Pace yourself

Don’t be a typical silly fresher and down 3 double vodkas an hour in. Stick to pints and don’t even consider a spirit until after the halfway point.

Grab something to eat half-way through

Usually eating before the night is over is a no-go, but on the Otley Run it’s not only acceptable but encouraged. Grab a Crispy’s when you're at Hyde Park Pub or some proper nosh at The Library.

Leeds Varsity

The student varsity is the biggest sporting event of the year, where the two arch-nemesis universities, the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University, compete head-to-head in a wide range of sporting events. Varsity begins in January but the biggest day is the finale in October, when they compete in over 60 different sports and the Men’s Rugby Union Grand Finale takes place at Headingley Carnegie Stadium, which over 15,000 students turn up to watch.

Tickets are of course very coveted, and will sell out pretty much on release. The best way to get one is to get one from the Varsity Website or from a sports society, as each society is allocated a certain amount to sell to its members.

You can tell the two universities apart because the University of Leeds students will all be in green, cheering on their Gryphon mascot, and Leeds Beckett will be dressed in purple, along with their mascot the Beckett Bear. Leeds Beckett is renowned as a sporting university, so it may come as no surprise that they have won Varsity a fair few times more than the University of Leeds!

Hyde Park (Woodhouse Moor)

As we mentioned before, our European counterparts have nothing to envy of the rainy weather in Leeds. However, on a rare sunny day, it is not surprising to see lecture halls empty and all the students sitting on the grass, enjoying the sun.

Saying that, the majority of students may not even make the walk from Hyde Park and Headingley to university on these days, and will all gather in Hyde Park (otherwise known as Woodhouse Moor) to enjoy some cans of beer (called tinnies in Yorkshire), summer tunes blaring out of their speakers and even some barbecues!
