İzmir is located in the Gulf of Izmir, in the west coast of Turkey. To the south of the city you have the city of Aydin and to the north there is Manisa. There are numerous ways to get to İzmir.

Getting to Izmir by Plane

The easiest way to directly reach İzmir is to catch a flight to its airport, İzmir Adnan Menderes, located in Gaziemir, 18km (11mi) south of the city.

To reach the centre you have a few options. First of all, you could get a taxi which would cost you around 90-100 TRY (£8 ish). A cheaper option would be to take the train (shuttle) or the bus. The shuttle departs every 10 minutes to and from the airport. You will need a ‘3-5 Bilet’ (ticket), available at the ticket desk allowing you to get 2, 3 or 5 train rides. The price for 2 rides is 9.00 TRY (£0.77).

There are two bus routes from İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport to the city. One has Alsancak as the final stop and the other route has its last stop in Mavisehir, located in the Kasiyaka district. Both routes stop at Alsancak Büyük Efes Oteli, which is where you want to get out if you’re heading to the centre ofİzmir. Tickets are available on the bus from the bus driver. A bus departs every hour from both the airport and the city. Travel time to and from the city is around 45 minutes. Alternatively, you can use the Havaş shuttles which costs 11 TRY, (0.94). The shuttles have scheduled half-hourly rounds from the airport to the city center and vice versa.

Finally, you can also get the underground to the centre. There is a well-organized and convenient metro system in İzmir. It doesn’t cost too much and it's easy to reach different parts of the city centre. You can check the train schedule from the website of Izmir Metro.

Getting to Izmir by Train

If you enjoy watching the countryside slide away as you travel or perhaps are looking for the more environmentally friendly choice, you can travel to İzmir by train. Probably the easiest and cheapest way of doing this is to buy an Interrail ticket, but this depends on your country of origin. You can arrange it according to your arrival in İzmir. For example, if you are from Köln then you can start from there to Budapest, Bucharest, Istanbul and finally İzmir. Basmane railway station is in the city center. To get more detailed information you can use the website Turkish Railways.
