Dayton's best brunch spot

Sunday brunch in Mudlick tap house

When I moved to the United states of America, I discovered the joy of sleeping in late on weekends, and eating brunch instead of eating breakfast and lunch separately. Because this is just what the brunch is – a mix of breakfast and lunch, and you can either view it as a very late breakfast or as a very early lunch.

And there is no shortage of great brunch places in the greater Dayton area, so sometimes, it can be hard to pick which one to go to. Recently, one of my good friends suggested to try out a brunch place, called Mudlick tap house, and this is exactly where we went. And I must say that I was very impressed about all aspects of this place.

Where can I find Mudlick tap house?

Mudlick tap house is situated on the 135 East 2nd street in Dayton, Ohio, outside of the city center. The place itself does not have its own parking lot, but metered parking is available across the street. If you are there on a weekend, metered parking is free, so look at the sign before already putting money into the parking meter like me, and seeing the sign after.

Well, even if you have to pay for parking, it is pretty cheap – one dollar for two hours. Just make sure you really do pay, because the parking police in Dayton is very strict, and you might find yourself with a parking ticket even if you only overstayed for a few minutes. From my experience, I would pay for at least two hours when eating at Mudlick tap house.

How does the place look like?

Mudlick tap house looks pretty small on the outside, but once you enter, you will realize that this is actually a pretty big warehouse. The place itself has two floors, and the first floor is mostly meant for just having a drink or three, meanwhile if you wish to also eat something, I would recommend you to go up to the second floor.

The first floor offers small booths and the enviroment there is much more intimate. If there are no more than three people in your grop, you might still want to stay on the first floor.

The bar on the first floor.

As you can see, the second floor is pretty spacious, and even if the space is open, the tables are far away from each other, so you will get all the privacy you need.

What food and drinks should I order?

When I first looked at the Mudlick tap house’s menu, I was pretty surprised, because it only had a few items on it to choose from.

This is the brunch menu. But do not let the small selection confuse you. All the items on the brunch menu sound delicious, so I had to ask a waitress for a recommendation, and she said that, without a doubt, I have to try their Mudlick rancheros.

Mudlick rancheros are basically just a bean patty with bacon and an egg on top, and they were delicious. I have never had such a flavourful bean patty before, and after a night of drinking before, I have to admit that Mudlick rancheros are a perfect hangover food

As you can see, the portions are pretty generous.

During my second visit to Mudlick tap house, I tried their Crab hash, which consisted of crab, hashbrowns, and an egg. If I could pick which dish I liked better, I would have to go with the Mudlick rancheros, but the Crab hash was not very far behind it.

Regarding the drinks, definitely try their mimosa and/or Bloody Mary. I used to hate Bloody Marys until trying one at Mudlick tap house. And the best part – you can build a custom one, meaning you can choose the type of Vodka you would like to be used in your Bloody Mary. Their drinks are not expensive at all, but if you would like them to be even cheaper, go there during the happy hour, which they call The happiness hour.

How much will it cost me?

Most brunch items cost between ten and fifteen dollars, and the drinks are all under fifteen dollars as well. If you go there with a couple of friends and share some food with them, you will be able to eat a very filling brunch for a very low price.

A few words for the end…

I have returned to Mudlick tap house for another brunch less than a week after my first visit, and it became one of my top three brunch places in Dayton. The food is ready incredibly quickly, the prices are low enough to make me want to eat there frequently, and their short menu is actually a great thing – first of all, it is much easier to choose what you want, and secondly, their food is just superb. So if you have a chance, definitely give this place a try when you are in Dayton.
