Trier, discovering one of the oldest cities of Germany and having fun like in our time
Trier, discovering one of the oldest cities of Germany and having fun like in our time
Arriving in Trier
I've have heard many people around me talking about Trier and after I got there I understood why.
If you are leaving in Saarbrucken then Trier is about 1 hour way with the train. As a side note I want to mention that while you are in the train the landscape with vines that is showing on left and right would amaze you.
From the Trier railway station the city center is about 10 minutes away, so not so far. If you forgot to bring water or food with you can find as soon as you are out of the station, on the left, a Kaufland supermarket or you can experience the local food in the city center where you will find a big market ( I will talk about that a bit later ).
Going around the streets and admiring the old beautiful buildings
As you are walking the streets your eyes will be often caught by the beautiful old arhitecture and small details of the buildings.
Porta Nigra
The first monument that stood out of the rest while trying to find the center was Porta Nigra or The Black Gate in english. This construction belongs to ancient Roman arhitecture and it was build starting with the year 107 AD. Probably, in the old times, this was the entering point into the city. Porta Nigra is now included in the UNESCO world heritage site.
Because I am telling you about Porta Nigra I have to tell you the main reason why I came to this city: The Porta Hoch 3 Festival, which took place in front of the Black Gate. The concert of Tom Odell and the audience was extremly great. Lots of fun and emotions.
The historical center and The Main Market
But, until the concert started I still had enough time to discover other parts of the city. So, after Porta Nigra I continued my way to the Main Market and I guess here is the historic city center. Around me I saw a lot of buildings with diffrent arhitectural styles, from renainssace to baroque and classicism and, for sure, everything had a german touch.
Here, in the market I felt like I was in the Middle Edges when people were trading for food. The smell of strawberries and flowers was mesmerizing. When you are passing by you can't just walk by, but you have to stop and maybe trade something. Fresh vegetables and fruits is what you can buy here. And also a glass of wine. Hmm, now I could not imagine how this market smells and feels like in Christmas time.
The weather was sunny, so sunny and at midday after looking around and taking photos I was searching the shadow.
Soon to cool down I entered the cathedral, Trierer Dom, the oldest church in Germany which is included in the Unesco World Heritage Site too. The Roman Monument kept my head up and eyes wondering around at the very high cellings, colums, decorations, the giant organ and the altar.
I found the inside garden too. I stayed a bit here, it was very beautiful and peaceful.
The Palastgarten and The Roman bridge
I continued my steps around the city passing through Palastgarten where some young people were having fun dancing and listenting to music. The atmosphere was relaxed, perfect for a picnic in the park. Here you can visit the Imperial Baths.
All of the important monuments are not so far from each other and that means you can walk around pretty easily without problems.
My next stop was the Roman Bridge, where I admired the construction but also the green hills over the Mosela river thinking about how cool it will be to have a house at the top of the hills from where I could see all Trier and beyond.
The long awaited concert of Tom Odell
At the end of the day, I returned at Porta Nigra for Tom Odell's performance where I had such a good time listening to his songs and being part of a great audience.
