Erasmus experience in Trier, Germany

Why did you choose to go to Trier, Germany?

There were interesting courses, it's a nice cultural city.

How long was your stay?

It was for one semester.

How is the student atmosphere in Trier?

It's a very good atmosphere, with many festivities, which doesn't make it easy if you live near the college (in the outskirts of town).

Would you recommend the city and university of Trier to other students?

Yes!

How is the food in this country?

The food of the "mensa" (school's cafeteria) is to be avoided. It's also very rare to find good meat in any German supermarket. Otherwise you quickly get used to eating lots of potatoes! Pizzerias are really cheap compared to those in France, which is cool.

How did you find accommodation?

Accommodation was suggested by the college, in Petrisberg, in very good condition and very well kept, even if it's far from the city. I also recommend "The Flag" (which is a new residence).

How are the rent prices? And prices in general in Germany?

Quite expensive I'd say if you are looking for private accommodation. It's a town quite close to the Luxembourg border, which could explain the high prices.

What about learning German language? Have you been to language classes organized by the university?

It is possible to learn German easily, even if in my course, being a French-speaking person, you could easily get away with it, without speaking a word of German (The law classes were in French, also, some shopkeepers also speak French).

What is the cheapest way to get to Trier from your city?

The train without hesitation! If you are under 20 years old (or more than 20 years old but benefit from state grants/benefits in Luxembourg) and you come or go through Luxembourg, a yearly card (called Jumbo) costs 50 € all the way to the border. Then you just have to pay the "semesterticket" and you can travel free from Luxembourg to Trier!

Which places would you recommend to party in Trier?

Cubiculum, Zapotexx, Stubi and a bar of the residence which is behind the Frauenkirche where beers are quite cheap; )

And to eat in Trier? What are your favorite places?

Pizzerias, 'Unikebab', etc.

What cultural tours do you recommend?

Porta Nigra, Christmas Market, WIP Petrisberg.

A tip for future students in Trier?

Try to take a lot of TD classes (Seminars) and not too many CM (vorlesung) it will be easier to understand and teachers will be more understanding. If you live in the city center avoid using the car (traffic is hectic). Do not forget your umbrella and jacket because the weather is not very pleasant (I'm saying this even though i'm from Lorraine, which is not a very sunny place in France)...
