Danish cookies

Introduction

Hello everyone, I hope, that you are all doing just fine.

In this article, I want to tell you about the cookies that everyone of us loved in our childhood, even if we didn’t really have them plenty back in those days.

So, have you ever heard about the Danish cookies? Or maybe you have heard about those “butter cookies”, that is usually how those Danish cookies are called. They are prepared with butter and some other ingredients, of course, however, they are still known as butter cookies and they are pretty delicious, I must say. Besides, they come in those tins where they are put, and those tins are what people love them so much for, too, so then, they will have something left to keep for themselves, even when they have eaten all those cookies. If you ask me, the tins are also why they love those Danish butter cookies. Well, at least, I like having the Danish butter cookies bought in those tins, so that when I have eaten all the cookies, I will still have that tin left to myself, to use it however I want. Most people have some chocolate or cookies stored in those tins, or they keep their sewing things or even some small and tiny things, so then they won’t get lost somewhere in their houses.

About Danish butter cookies

Well, Danish butter cookies are also known as Danish biscuits, Brysslkex or Sables and they are prepared with butter, flour and sugar, and they don't contain much of other ingredients. They are pretty delicious: once you start eating, it’s really hard to stop.

You may have also heard the name Vaniljekranse, which means vanilla wreaths and they are put into the tins with other cookies, too. I didn’t really like them back in my childhood, because they had this white granulated sugar crystals or something like that on top of them.

Despite all the things that the cookies contain, they are not very large and they are pretty enough for a person, so then they don’t have too many calories in them, if you want to know the truth. There are about 50 kcal in one cookie, however, I guess it all depends on the cookie and the way it was prepared. Did you know that Danish butter is different from the other prepared butters? That’s why they have pretty different cookies there and other stuff prepared from butter.

Danish cookies in Flying Tiger Copenhagen

Well, during my stay in Copenhagen, I discovered this shop, which was called “Flying Tiger Copenhagen” and I wondered what was it about. It turned out that it was a pretty cheap store, with all those necessary things for your home, I mean, there were all those stationery, kitchenware, bathroomware, children stuff, toys, painting things, chocolates, ice creams, juices, etc. And they also had those cookies, which were the Danish cookies and they were pretty cheap. Well, they were not very cheap, because the large tin cost 30 DKK, however, for the Danish it was pretty cheap, I must say. That’s where I bought those Danish cookies with its tins. Mostly, I wanted to have those tins for myself, if you want to know the truth, because I just loved the tins they had there. They were really lovely and beautiful and I couldn’t bare not taking them with me. Well, we ate the cookies there - me and the other students from other countries, who were there for the same reason that I was - and we really liked them, if you want to know the truth.

There were two types of Danish cookies tins for sale at the Flying Tiger and both tins looked really lovely, so I decided to taste both of them. There were small tins and bigger ones. The small tin was red and it didn't come with as many cookies as the bigger one. The bigger one was blue and there were more cookies comparing to the red one. To tell you the truth, the cookies in the red one were different and more delicious than the ones from the blue tin, however, the cookies from the blue one were more like those tradicional standard Danish cookies. Those tins were pretty useful in many ways besides storing the cookies, so I bought both of them, ate the cookies and brought the tins back home to Georgia.

Danish cookies in Georgia

Of course, you can buy those Danish cookies in Georgia too, however, they are pretty expensive and they don’t really come in those lovely tins, either. I remember, sometimes, people would give us those kind of Danish cookies on birthdays or some parties and we would love to see the cookies in those tins. Now if you want to buy them you will have to pay about 30 Laris for each tin box of butter cookies, I guess.

I saw those kind of Danish cookies at the Super supermarket on Christmas season. They were really good-looking and they had those Christmas decorations on them. They costed somewhere about 30 Laris, so it was possible to buy them, because they looked pretty good from the outside, if you ask me. They had some different shapes too, and you could have a boot-shaped tin box full of those butter cookies. You can even have them now, because they still sell those cookies there in Super supermarket.

You can also find those Danish cookies in tins at the Fresco supermarket or Goodwill supermarket. They also have them in Smart and Carrefour supermarkets, however, I have tasted those ones in Fresco supermarket only and they are pretty much the same as those in Denmark, I guess.

Cookies in the tin

Well, to be honest, I didn’t really know about this until just recently and I want to share this information with you. I’m sure, you have all bought, seen or eaten those Danish butter cookies at least once in your life and I don’t know about you, but I have always wondered why those cookies had such shapes or why they were came in those quantities and stuff like that. So that, let me tell you about it.

You know, when you open the tin of Danish cookies, there are five kinds of cookies there and each of them are doubled in amount, I mean, there are always two of a kind in that tin. And each of those kinds have names and they are different from the other kinds, of course.

First of all, there are those simple ones in the center, which are called Finsk brød, which means “Finnish bread” in English and they are some kind of traditional dessert on Christmas, alongside the famous rice pudding with syrup.

Then comes the U-shaped cookies, which are the Danish cookies. They are similar those cakes, which Danes traditionally have on their weddings: that cake called "Kransekage", which is made of almond-flavoured rings and there is a bottle of liquor in the center. They are Vanille kranse, which means “vanilla wreaths” in Danish.

Then comes the Kanelkager, which means “cinnamon cakes” and they are kind of dark because they have some cinnamon sprinkled on top of them and, well, usually, to tell you the truth, you can not really taste the cinnamon in them, however, they do have some cinnamon on top of them and that is why they are kind of dark in colour.

Then there are those pretzels called “Kringle” and they are pretty different, because they have some holes in them and they are really hard to prepare at home because of its shape. However, children mostly love those pieces, I guess.

And then there are those butter cookies. Those are the round shaped cookies, which have some sugar sprinkled on top of them and that’s what I was telling you about. People call them Smørrekikser, which means “butter cookies” in English.

Well, I hope, that now you know some new things about those cookies, so then when you open a Danish cookies tin, you will know which cookie has what ingredient added to them.

So, these were some information I wanted to share with you about those Danish butter cookies and I’m sure that now you have got some new information about them. Remember, that if you are ever in Denmark or in the Netherlands or even in Germany, you can find the Flying Tiger Copenhagen stores in those countries and buy those Danish butter cookies there in reasonable prices, however, there are some things, that you can’t really ignore and perhaps you will want to buy some pretty expensive tins of Danish cookies, but, trust me, you will be paying that amount of money for the tins and not for the actual cookies, because all those cookies taste the same, if you ask me.
