Meet the seafood version of Mzoli's.
Die Strandloper represents a typical West Coast braai. While planning my road trip around the West Coast, I bumped in to this basic beach restaurant. Situated on the Langebaan beach, it felt like a good idea to check this out.
Die Strandloper is basically a 10-course braai but instead of serving meat, they serve seafood. Local fish, mussel soup, the traditional dish 'potjie' which is sort of a stew, crayfish and freshly baked bread with homemade jam, are the things you can expect there. The whole diner can take some time, so feel free to walk around in-between courses. Take a stroll on the beach, climb onto the boulders or just relax in the sun while ending your meal with a cup of tea and some koeksisters.
The venue itself is quite lovely as it is located on the beach. The tables and benches are made of stone and wood. Shade is provided by a construction of fishing nets and tarpaulins. Restrooms are mobile toilets, but they are very clean and not smelly at all. So no worries, you don't have to be a fancy pants to enjoy this 10-course meal. Drop the shoes and get your feed in the sand.
Make a reservation! Since the place is quite popular, showing up without a reservation can leave you with an empty stomach. Also, they don't always serve lunch and dinner. So just make a call before you go there and try arranging your diner a few days from before. The restaurant will call on the day of the reservation to make sure you didn't forget your booking.
Price starts at ZAR 260 per person, this includes all food. Drinks can be obtained from the bar, but you are more than welcome to bring your own.
Other places like Die Strandloper are Die Melkbosskerm. This one lies a little higher up the West-Coast. It is too very lovely and the food is even better! I visited this one with my parents and they both loved it.
