Today’s recipe will be about another very famous and popular Italian dessert: the tiramisu! I am pretty sure that every single one of you has already tried it at least one. This cake is very convenient, especially when you have a lot of guests.

It might not seem like it but the tiramisu is actually quite light to eat as a dessert: the ingredients used to make it are not so heavy and it has to be put in the fridge before serving. Let’s get started with the recipe!

This cake is quite long to cook, around 2 hours and a half, and this recipe is for a cake that serves 6 people.

Remark: this recipe is for a tiramisu with coffee, but you can also replace it with chocolate if you or one of your guests do not like coffee.

Ingredients needed:

  • 3 cups of strong espresso coffee. Leave it aside and allow it to cool down at the room temperature before using;
  • 3 tablespoons of coffee liqueur, Tia Maria is a good one for example;
  • 2 eggs, yolks and whites will have to be separated;
  • ¼ cup of caster sugar;
  • 250g of mascarpone cheese;
  • 1 cup of cream (whipped cream works just fine);
  • 250g of ladyfingers biscuits (I know some of my friends also put speculoos biscuits instead, you see what you prefer);
  • Cocoa powder.

Method to follow:

  1. In a large bowl, put the egg yolks and the sugar together. Beat until it becomes pale (this part is easier with an electric mixer, but doing it with your arms also works as a workout). Add the mascarpone and mix again until it all comes together.
  2. Whip the cream and fold it to the egg mixture.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites. The bowl has to be very clean, because if there is any grease, the egg whites won’t come out as expected and the cake won't work (same here, better but harder with your arms).
  4. To serve, you can use either individual large glasses or one single big dish. If you use a large dish, put the coffee and the liqueur in a bowl, and dip the ladyfingers (or speculoos biscuits), one at a time. Drain well and layer in your dish to cover all of the bottom. If you use individual glasses, you just have to break the biscuits for them to fit in the glasses and follow the same procedure.
  5. Place half of the mascarpone mixture on top and spread it out, covering all the biscuits. Repeat these 2 steps with the remaining biscuits and the rest of the mascarpone mix.
  6. Use the cocoa powder to dust the surface. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, the tiramisu has to be cold when serving.

And that’s it! No need to cook in the oven, but instead place it in the refrigerator and wait for it to get cold so that it doesn’t break when serving, and that still takes some time. This cake is great for a dessert or for a snack in the afternoon, with a coffee or hot chocolate!

Above you can find a picture of what your cake should look like, more or less! Of course you can decorate your plate to make it look prettier and make your guests even more hungry! Enjoy!

TIP: you can also serve it with ice cream, especially vanilla flavor. I think they go great together and make this dessert a little more special and personalized!
