Pan con tomate: a Spanish speciality
What is "pan con tomate"?
The typical 'bread with tomato' found in Barcelona may also be known as "Italian bruschetta". In fact, it it made from a slice of crusty bread, straight from the oven, which crushed tomatoes spread over the top, exactly like in Italy.
But how is it made?
Personally, I recommend you don't use simple sandwich bread, but a slice from a real, fresh loaf. It wouldn't be typical to use a sandwich bread, or even the end of a loaf.
A true 'pan con tomate' requires a slice of fresh bread with tomato (perfectly ripe) to crush on top! =)
When would you use it?
The type of bread used in this appetiser is also used for other courses - for example, to accompany the traditional potato omelette which you will find in Barcelona, otherwise known as the tortilla de patate.
