What is it like to live in Trier? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I would recommend living in Trier, the city is very proud of its antique places, and it has a very nice "Fußgängerzone", the german place where you go shopping between old houses - and cars are not allowed to drive there.

Shopping, eating, sightseeing and the people are great - but it is far away from everything.

What is the student lifestyle like in Trier?

Campus. You have town-students and uni-students. The first kind loves to party, the second one too, but they prefer to study. And there are some people living far off (like over 100 km) and they only come to Trier for studying.

How much does it cost to live in Trier?

Rent is usually around 600€ but you can get a good german beer (bier) for 2. 70€ or cider (Apfelwein or Viez) for 1. 80€.

Food is cheap at Kaufland or Lidl, and you can live with 10€ a week. If you smoke (what german people do not do anymore) ask people with cars to bring you cigarettes from Luxemburg.

At uni, in a student-dorm, there is a private party every Wednesday or Thursday.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Trier? Is there any advice you can give?

Get a flat close to the uni or downtown in july not in August or October! In July or June you can get easily a nice flat with big windows and heating for 250€. In October, you will only find the expensive rest - mold in the bathroom, 4th floor without elevator and mean landlords.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Very common is Kartoffelkiste in the city, Viez - with alcohol, and of course the wine.

What places would you recommend visiting in Trier?

A vineyard, all the antique places, Mariensäule, Cubiculum and the Unisport of the University

Also the Erasmus events of the Uni: all very nice, usually good organised... and the Sport is very cheap (like 60€ for your whole stay - and you meet a lot of people).

Is it good to eat out in Trier? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

See above Cubiculum - try Pizzasalat, a Pizza and a salad on one plate. They also have a lot of stuff with bacon. Takes a long time, cause only one or two people are running the whole place.

Is the nightlife good in Trier? Where is good to go?

I did not like it, it was a bit too small. There are some festivals close by, which I recommend (Lott Festival - to advertise one of the smaller ones)

What advice would you give future students heading to Trier?

Unisport! And Tarforst Kneipe - at the student-dorm of the Tarforst dorm at the uni. Many Erasmus and Not-Erasmus students meet there.

And Kartoffelkiste.
