Experience in Regensburg, Germany by Anna
What is it like to live in Regensburg? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Regensburg is like living somewhere where people discovered the life elixir, because there are so many young students. I would absolutely recommend it. It does not matter if people are stressed, you will almost always be treated kindly. The city is pulsing... Countless pubs and bars and clubs for the party-goers, a few big bookstores and cultural events, parks and near forests for the harmony lovers. It´s also got a good size because it has all the city standard stores and facilities but you can still reach everywhere quite quickly just by catching the right bus line.
I have nothing against the winter snow but the morning fog of the colder months of the year is something I don't like. The city itself is nothing extravagant, nothing fancy. I really believe that the students with their characters and stories are saving it from being boring. In 2014 it was the city in Bavaria with the most fully alcoholized people who were hospitalized. So if you bring some alcohol immunity with you, you got a plus here.
What is the student lifestyle like in Regensburg?
Many of the students who study here are from villages and towns around Regensburg what causes many of them to drive home everyday, or every weekend and holidays. Of course some students study a lot harder than others but in the average I'd say that they take their free time but get focused when they have to. If there´s a job to be done, it has to be done right (Bavarians say that in general). There is competition but the tendency to sit in the Mensa cafeteria together and help each other out is high and I haven´t seen anybody becoming unfair or unpleasant to others so far.
At the university campus the dorms and the faculties, all nationalities students are to be found. Everybody is open minded up to some level because they don´t know who is in front of them. Most things happen spontaneously. You get a message on Facebook or whatsapp and you´re out the door. I can't talk about a particular lifestyle here because there is really a bit of everything.
How much does it cost to live in Regensburg?
The rent is not as high as in other bigger cities in Germany, and the food is cheap. Restaurant prices are average I´d say. I don´t think that I pay too much for gas, water and electricity. Things are made up the way that students with not too high budgets are able to afford living here.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Regensburg? Is there any advice you can give?
If you look for a place to stay, about five or six months before you get here you should be on the safe side. At the beginning of every semester, especially the winter semester, the city is flooded with students so the earlier you get on a list for a dorm room or look for a student appartment or whatever you are searching for, the better.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I have to admit that being in Germany did not lead me to eat more german food. The Mensa food isn't bad in comparison to other countries. My friends always tell me of new restaurants they like, if Italian, Indian, Greek or Chinese. The cocktail and beer variaty is as big as you can imagine and there is something for everyone's taste. Should you be a vegetarian or even a vegan I can tell that you can definitely make it here. If you want to know more contact me.
What places would you recommend visiting in Regensburg?
That absolutely depends on who you are.
Is it good to eat out in Regensburg? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I love Cafe DADA and Hans im Glück... Cafe lila. Cafe felix. The Rostaria or Pam Pam is good if you´re an Italian food fan... Cafe Anna is also good (not only because it has my name). There are probably so many good spots that you can´t try them all out.
Is the nightlife good in Regensburg? Where is good to go?
Nightlife is great here. You just better have the night filter or the night guide for free at the university where all big names of clubs, pubs and bars and their advantages, style and special offers are listed. Bigger parties are usually advertised in front of the mensa.
What advice would you give future students heading to Regensburg?
Do some time management, enjoy yourself, don´t dance on tables if you are drunk because you might fall off like a friend of mine did and just stay cool. Really... Just relax.
