The City That Never Sleeps!
The City That Never Sleeps
So many dreams begin from New York. I remember when I was in my fourth grade, when people asked me what I wanted to do when I grow up, or where I wanted to settle, I’d always give an answer that ends with New York. Its not like I had seen a lot of movies or read a lot about it, but somehow just the idea of settling down in a fast city excited me.
I have dreamt of being a workaholic. I know it sounds weird, but I want for a fact to work 12 hours a day and put all the effort that I can. I have been raised to be completely independent and somehow I got that vibe from that city when I first went there.
How it began
I was in grade X when I went to New York for the first time. I basically had to visit the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and attend a short workshop at Harvard. New York just came along with the package. So, I took a flight from Calcutta, India to Dubai which takes five hours and then took one from Dubai to Newark which was another thirteen hours as far as I remember. We had a bus waiting for us at the airport which took us straight to our hotel.
What we did
So we did quite a few things in New York. From Broadway to a workshop to visiting Times Square to shopping, our whole trip was pretty packed.
The Broadway
I have done some theatre myself in my school days and watching a musical at Broadway has been a dream. Our school chose the classic “The Lion King” and we got the tickets for the evening. Meanwhile there was a surprised planned for us for which we were taken to a studio. We had absolutely no clue of what was going on until we saw one of the actors of the renowned show “Two Broke Girls” right in front of us. We were literally thrilled to see him. He began with introducing himself and gave us an idea about his work. He conducted a workshop for us where he trained us for our acting skills a little and then in the end took questions from us. He was so humble and polite that it literally made our day. But the best part was, it wasn’t even over yet! I still had a broadway show to go to. So we went back to out hotel to freshen up a little and get into better clothes.
The show started at around 7 pm I suppose, I have forgotten a little about the timing so I maybe wrong. But what I do remember is, being awestruck by the theatre. It was so big and so professional that I literally felt like crying the tears of happiness. It was my dream come true. But little did I know that there was more to that too! Once the show started, I couldn’t take my eyes off the stage even for a second. The lighting, the special effects, the sound system, the music and the stage was so beautifully coordinated and designed that I fell in love with the show. If you happen to be in New York and haven’t seen one of these before, I would request you to please, please watch it. It is absolutely one of a kind!
Times Square
Have you ever had one of those experiences where when you see someone and you automatically suddenly feel at peace? Well that happened to me when I saw times Square!
It's magical! All your favourite brands are at the same place. And there’s just so much light and life in that one area that it fills you with a very different kind of energy. My favourite is Forever 21 and when I saw its store, I was mesmerised. It had a whole floor dedicated to accessories! Can you imagine how happy I must have been to see that? And then it has a lot of food joints as well which serve extremely delicious food. I ate pizzas and burgers and they were better than I have had anywhere else. I did not have a lot of time to spend over there so that’s pretty much all the idea I could gather about it. But, you can take my word for the fact that you wouldn’t regret going there. It’s the most happening place I have ever been to and I would jump at any chance I get to go back there.
The Empire State Building
Who would want to miss out the view of the whole New York from up there?
It's beauty. That building from inside is classy and sophisticated. And once you go to the top of it, you get to experience the phrase “I feel like I’m on the top of the world! ” literally. The day we chose to go there it was pretty cloudy so we could barely see the distant objects, but whatever we did see was enough to convince me that it was a great decision to do this. The clouds were almost in our faces and the wind was so strong that you feel so alive I can’t express in words. And when you get to see the busiest, the most happening city from their tallest tower, I doubt you should miss it for anything.
The Statue of Liberty
God! I’ve seen this in so many movies I can’t even count. But seeing it in front of my own eyes, was a very different experience. So to go there, you need to first get on a ship to the island where the statue is made. Now again due to lack of time, I couldn’t go very close the statue but I did make it to the Island. The ship ride was smooth and there’s on every hour or so, so that shouldn’t be a problem, however I would suggest that you be careful while coming back as there’s a long queu to get back and you often either miss ships or get separated from your family and friends.
Apart from that, the island is beautiful. It is green and has a lot of souvenir stores and food stores. I bought myself a little statue of liberty to remind me of the trip. They have a number of food joints to choose from but I chose an ice cream because of the strong heat.
I hope that one day my dream does come true. I want to experience life with the speed that New York offers. And its definitely true what people say, New York is so full of life, vibrant and fast that it truly is “the city that never sleeps”.
I hope this article helped you. If nothing else, motivated you to travel and explore. Travelling has been my passion since a very long time and nothing makes me more happy than going to places I haven’t been before, even if it is just an hour away from my home. So I request all of you to pursue your dream of travelling and share your experiences with people.
Thank you.
