Experience in New York, United States by sarah
What is it like to live in New York? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
New York City is a fast-paced city. It is difficult to escape this feeling even when you are at home doing your own thing. If you are living here, I recommend you find a place to unwind and commune with nature at least once a week. City parks and private parks are wonderful places to do that and NYC has an abundance of them. In fact, NYC has more green space per capita than any city in the United States. My favorite private park is Wave Hill in the Bronx. Who doesn't love Central Park----it is the crown jewel of the city's public parks! But other parks offer just as much in the way of beauty and nature. Explore Van Cortland Park in the Bronx or Prospect Park in Brooklyn to begin.
What is the student lifestyle like in New York?
Students know how to make it work in cities. They get to know each other and share experiences----especially the free and low cost. There are SO many free and cheap experiences for bona fide students with a student ID. Take advantage of them! When Broadway was open, students got super great deals on tickets, for example.
How much does it cost to live in New York?
NYC is an expensive city to be sure. However, there are ways to modify the expense. Living with roommates, eating in, and conserving your use of digital subscriptions, etc. If you are a student, take advantage of all of the amenities and resources offered by your university. New Yorker's are notoriously cheap so look for the deals. I can't put a dollar figure on the cost, but I can say that you may need to spend upwards of $900 a month on rent to share an apartment. But you may find better deals with a little effort.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in New York? Is there any advice you can give?
Right now it is easy because many people have left the city. The best way to find your own apartment is to visit buildings and knock on doors of the superintendent. They will always know what is available and you can be the first one to apply. Otherwise, you can check craigslist for roommate situations.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
We have everything here. Your neighborhood will determine what the predominant cuisine is, but almost every neighborhood has almost every culture and country represented.
What places would you recommend visiting in New York?
Wave Hill, Central Park, Striver's Row in Harlem.
Is it good to eat out in New York? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Of course! My favorite spots are vegetarian. They include Blossom, The Uptown Juice Bar, and Vegetarian Dim Sum.
Is the nightlife good in New York? Where is good to go?

What advice would you give future students heading to New York?
Read as much as you can about the city before you go.
