WILL I GAIN WEIGHT ON ERASMUS?

Hello, hello, hello future Erasmus students!

How are you?

Today I am writing a post about a topic that causes controversy in the world of Erasmus. The question whether you will gain a couple of kilos during your time on Erasmus is one of those thoughts that is always present in the back of everyone's mind before and after "living la vida Erasmus".

1. It's a reality.

From my point of view, generally speaking, people always gain a couple of kilos. In my case, I have always been a slim woman, and on some occasions I have wanted to gain a kilo voluntarily so that I could become more healthy, but I had never been able to do it, before I went on Erasmus that is. My aim on Erasmus was not to get fat, but the kilos arrived as if by magic.

2. Does it depend?

I did not change my diet because I had the luck of having a housemate that cooked phenomenally and she taught me a lot. Due to this, I was able to follow a healthy diet just as I had done in Spain. When I say diet, I don't mean a restrictive diet or anything like that, I just mean food routine. I didn't have any restrictions, and that being said, I did not abuse anything either. All in moderation, but I ate everything nevertheless. Then I gained weight. This can be dependent on: eating when you get home from clubbing (which I did a lot more often in England than in Spain), and the food in the supermarkets being a little more artificial than in Spain.

Take care with the industrial bakery theme: every time you come back from a party, take care with the microwave as it is used a lot on Erasmus and it is not the healthiest thing in the world. You have to take this into account.

3. Should I learn to cook?

If you are not going to be living and eating in a residence, my advice is yes. It is the only way to avoid junk food and precooked foods that will give you a few kilos more. I was very motivated in the kitchen and I learned how to cook. If I could do it, you can too for sure. I also advise you to always ask for advice from friends who know how do it wonderfully, and if you are lucky enough to be invited to eat, be an active part of the preparation. I'll leave some photos of recipes prepared by the chef and student Alfonso Bucero so that you get an idea of how you can get to cook as a student:

Looks good, no?

So, I encourage you to go to the kitchen. My conclusion to the subject of getting fat during Erasmus is that you don't always know the reason, but you'll get a little bit fatter. In my case at least, and that of my roommates. There are probably some people who lose weight if they don't adapt or like all the different foods and flavors of their new country, but, if you are like me who likes to eat everything, you have a little work to do! Do some sports to fight those extra kilos that come with Living The Erasmus Life.

Kisses,

Elena
