Where to eat in Krakow

The first few days in Krakow you'll be shopping all day, seeing the city and going from one place to another and the least you'll think about is going food shopping and going home to make dinner. Krakow, on the subject of food, is a bargain, because a decent meal with first and second courses and drink costs you about 4 euros on average. I'm going to tell you a few places where you can eat well and on the cheap for those first few days:

  1. Koko. Going to Koko on weekends is terrible, especially between 13:00 and 15:00, because it will be full of students. If you order at the bar, they have a menu in English and Spanish, but basically you are reduced to choosing a soup first, a meat second and a side (rice or chips) and salad. Everything costs about 3€ and you get plenty of food. Also half a litre of beer costs you 1€, the water like everywhere else in Poland is a little more expensive. You can't pay with a card, so bring cash.
  2. The Raspberry Grandmother. Is it the English translation, the name in Polish..? I have no idea, but I left a picture of the logo that they have on the door of all the restaurants (I know there are two, I do not know if there are more). It's the best place to taste typical Polish food. I recommend to order the zurek served on bread, which is a soup with lots of things inside that they serve you in a bowl made with bread that you can then eat too. Ask for it on bread, because if you don't, the same thing will be served to you in a normal bowl. For seconds, the pierogi, a typical Polish food filled with different things like spinach, meat, fruit... and of course, the half a litre of beer costs you about another euro. The only drawback is that there are no waiters, so you have to ask at the bar and you will get a number, and when your number comes up on the screen, you take the dishes to your table.
  3. The zapiekanki in the Jewish Quarter. In the Plac Nowy there is a ring of food stores where they usually sell zapienki (there is also some ice cream and sushi). This is the typical place to try zapiekanki, which are very similar to paninis but are enormous. The normal size is about 70 centimetres, but there are also a couple of places where you can order half, and if you want a whole one you can order two halves and try two different types. It costs about 2€, and more if you choose a drink, too. The bad thing is that that they have nowhere to sit, so you have to take it down the street because they are like street food stalls, so you have to eat it fast and go somewhere, because in winter in Poland at -10 º C... it's not nice to sit on a terrace!
  4. Banialuka. This place has traditional Polish food just like the Raspberry Grandmother, maybe Banialuka is cheaper if that's possible, the quality is normal, so I recommend the Grandmother more, but from 8 pm is better not to go. This place has half a litre of beer and shots at less than one euro, so all Erasmus and Polish students go there as soon as night falls, so the environment is very stifling.

There are many more places to eat apart from the typical chains such as KFC, Burger King... They are also cheaper in Krakow, but if you come for a few days it is better to try typical Polish food. Yes, this food is everywhere and is very heavy, so sometimes (like what's happened to me on all of my visits) the food will keep you full even for dinner, too!
