Hello everyone, today I want to tell you about my half-oatmeal cookies and how I made them and how good they are when you taste them.

Well, there are some ways that I make them and each of them taste differently. It depends on pretty much everything and I can’t really choose which one is the most important one to determine the consistency or taste or whatever of those cookies. However, the basic stuff is not much changeable and so, let’s see what the basics are and then move forward to the add-ons and stuff like that.

So, the basics are oatmeal, all-purpose flour, sugar and butter or margarine or some oil, and, of course, some baking powder or baking soda, however, you can even not add this baking powder and just be like that. It’s even delicious without eggs and stuff like that and that’s pretty surprising. Well, at least, it was surprising for me.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups oatmeal
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0. 5 package baking powder
  • Pinch of baking soda
  • 1 cup white granulated sugar
  • Chocolate chips
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup margarine or unsalted butter

Preparation process

The preparation process is really easy. You just have to mix all up. You don’t even need a mixer and you can do it on your own with a whisking tool or even with just a spoon. I usually mix margarine and sugar first, then comes the egg and then the heavy cream, baking powder and baking soda and then the oatmeal and all-purpose flour. The dough should be kind of thick if you want it to be like a ball and it should be not very thick if you want it to be soft and kind of flat. If you have some chocolate chips or something that you want to add to your cookies, you can add them at the end and mix them together and that’s pretty much it. They are really easy to make, right?

So, then all you need is to preheat the oven on 170 degrees Celsius and make small balls from the dough and place them on pan which is covered with baking sheet or you should spread some oil on the pan and place those balls and then put them in the oven. It can take from 10 to 15 minutes until the cookies are ready.

The idea of those cookies

Now that I’ve shared this recipe with you, I would like to tell you about the cookies and how I got the idea of making them, as you know I don’t really care about the recipes, I mean, I read the recipe, but then I don’t really follow it, because then I add some things and so on and so forth and whatsoever. And you may wonder, why I do that. I don’t know. I just like to experiment, I guess.

So, when I was a child, we had this recipe, well, my mother had. It said that it was a recipe for cookies which should have been crispy and so that it was called “Pechenia”. That is from Russian language “Pechenie” and it means a crispy cookie. That recipe had to have some ground walnuts in it and the dough was kind of the same, it needed some flour, eggs, sugar, Matsoni (yogurt or sour-cream), baking soda, margarine and ground walnuts and that was it. I must say, that they were very delicious. Then we just lost the recipe sheet and I was really upset about that because I didn’t really remember the amounts of the ingredients, though I remembered what was needed, but that wasn’t helpful much. So, with that recipe and ingredients I could prepare something like that, but I don’t know whether it would be like those pechenia or not. I tried different recipes and I didn’t use ground walnuts in any of them and they turned out pretty good, though. Some were crispy, some were soft, but both of them were really delicious. Sometimes I used to add some cocoa powder to the dough and it made the cookies taste really good, too. I just love cocoa, you know.

Then, once I was going to prepare those kind of cookies and I remembered that there were oatmeal cookies, too, and I wondered how they tasted. And I knew that oatmeal was better than all-purpose flower, so I just went and bought some oatmeal. They were the whole once, though and I thought grinding them would be a better idea, so I had them ground and made them more like flour and used them in my recipe. I put 2:1 portion of oatmeal and all-purpose flour in my recipe and wondered what it would be like when the cookies were done. I also added some cocoa powder and made it really brown. It tasted good when it was raw. Now it was time to see what it would taste like when it was cooked.

I preheated the oven, spread some oil on the pan and made small balls from the dough and put them on the pan. I baked them until they had this look of being done. Well, of course I didn’t want these cookies to be overcooked. Some minutes later I took the pan out and took the cookies and tasted one of them. It tasted good and it was pretty cooked and everything. It was really delicious. I must say, that I had many of them made. The dough was plenty and more than enough for me, but I knew that my mother would come and she would love to taste them and, besides, those crispy cookies can be kept for a longer time than the usual cakes with cream or stuff like that.

Then my uncle and aunt and cousin came to visit us and it was a perfect timing. I served them with my newly baked cookies and they just loved them. Especially my uncle, he loves those kind of stuff. And he was asking about the recipe. Well, I told him some things about it, but it’s hard to remember everything when told, so he just told me to visit them some day and prepare those cookies for them and that way they would learn how to prepare those cookies, too. Of course I said yes, but that time never came. I hope I will visit them one day with that cooking and stuff. Don’t think that I haven’t visited them after that, _ I have indeed! However, there hasn’t been that moment, when we could cook those cookies there with them.

So, after that, I have prepared those cookies many times, I can say that, and each time I prepare them differently, I guess. It’s just about that moment, what I want to do and how I want to do it. sometimes I want those cookies to be plain, sometimes I want them with cocoa powder, and sometimes I want them with chocolate chips or raisins or other stuff. It’s all about the mood and feelings and all the other stuff, you know what I mean.

Well, to be honest, when I first prepared those half-oatmeal cookies (as I call them), I didn’t really remember how I prepared them and I needed to remember it, so I prepared them some time later. I didn’t write down the recipe, though, if you want to know the truth. I mean, what kind of person doesn’t write down the recipe when they prepare something that is really delicious?! But I didn’t do that, and I prepared those cookies for a couple of times not writing down the recipe and this is the case when I wrote it down and I’m sharing it with you, so that you will know how to prepare them and when I need to remember the recipe or some details about it, I will see this blog and know what to do. It’s just easier when you have everything written down, because once you need something, you can just look it up and read it and there’s no need of asking around or surfing the net or google or search for it in some books and stuff like that, you know.

So the last time I prepared those cookies was last week, when my sister asked to bake some cookies for her for our ride to the seaside _ something to eat on the road. So I made those oatmeal cookies. And I made them a lot! This recipe is written down from that time, I mean, that was when I decided to have a recipe written of those oatmeal cookies. The difference from other cookies that I had prepared other times was that those ones had some chocolate chips in them and they made them taste really good. So these were half-oatmeal and half-chocolate chip cookies, I guess, because it was none of them separately.

I baked them on baking sheet and that’s really easier than baking them on a pan with oil. When the baking sheet is dirty you can just change it and if you are preparing those cookies on an oily pan and something sticks on it, it’s just harder to get rid of it, or you have to wash the pan and then use it again and so on and so forth and it’s just really time-consuming. So, I baked three or four portions of those cookies, I guess, with the first dough, and then I was asked to make even more and so that I made another dough and baked those cookies again. First time the dough was kind of soft and the cookies came out soft and they were like muffins or something like that, you know. Then I added some flour to the dough and made it even thicker, so that the balls would be real balls! That way, the cookies became more like balls and were round and higher and when I let them cook for 15 minutes or something like that, they became crispy and they were just the real crispy cookies that we buy at the grocery stores. My sister and mother and brother just liked them and my sister said that she wanted those kind of cookies so that I made those crispy ones even more and they were just happy, you know. Well, they just couldn’t stop eating them, so that’s why they asked me to bake another set of those cookies, of course, so that they could eat more, but they knew that those were for the road, so that they stopped eating them little by little. I really did learn how to prepare those cookies, I mean, the crispy ones and I was really glad about that. I think, that’s why I wrote the recipe down, so that I would remember how I prepared those crispy cookies.

So, everything I said about the cookies is like the anthology of my cookies, if you ask me. And I wanted to have it written somewhere, too. That’s why I wrote about them. It’s good to have something like that somewhere, because when you want to read them or remember them, you can just go to the website and look at them and read them or whatever and that’s pretty cool, if you ask me. And these cookies are just very simple and easy to prepare and they are very good for everything _ for the road, for serving people and stuff like that and they are made quickly and don’t need much stuff, so I really recommend them, you know.

Well, I guess, you will prepare them some time and you will be pretty satisfied with this recipe and how good they become when cooked and how easy it is to cook them and how other people will love those cookies and ask for it again and again! These are great treats and you can store for a longer time and they won’t become bad or bitter or something and they will still taste good, you know those crispy cookies can be kept for a really long time. So, it’s just a great idea to have those cookies. And remember, that if you have a softer dough and bake for 10-12 minutes, they won’t be very crispy, what’s more, they will be soft and like a cake and they will taste delicious, too, so that if you don’t want something to be not crispy, you can just do that thing and they will become soft and light.
