Homemade Toothpaste

Hello! Here I am starting my first blog entry.

First of all, I want to share with you the recipe of a very easy homemade toothpaste, that is used a lot in Mexico. You can get the ingredients very cheap and easily, in any chemist there. Now that I am back in Spain, I have wanted to continue with the dynamic and what better way to do this, than to share with you all, what I have learned from Mexican culture.

During my stay in Mexico, as an exchange student, I completely immersed myself into the world of DIY. In this country it is very likely that you will find that many people have this same interest; because firstly, in the end you know what you are consuming and secondly, it is more healthy and ecological.

Conventional toothpaste has fluoride, and even though we convince ourselves that it is healthy and good for our health; it is an accumulated substance, what does that tell you? The measure of consuming it, your body doesn't process it and it is going to accumulate it, little by little in our body and bones.... When we consume it in small amounts, it is not a problem, the problem comes when we are consuming it daily... Think that, if we brush our teeth three times per day throughout our lives....

You can find different recipes on the internet, with coconut or clay base.... First off, I tried to make it with coconut and was not satisfied with the result... Then with clay and I liked the texture and the result much more. So here it goes! Here is how I usually make it, after many other attempts :)

Recipe for a CLAY BASED TOOTHPASTE :

Ingredients:

  • White clay

  • Infused sage and thyme (10 spoonfuls)

  • Mint essential oil (4 drops)

  • An Aloe Vera leaf (optional)

  • Sea salt (2 pinches)

  • Bicarbonate soda (2 pinches, optional)

    Our ingredients!

Properties, how to make it and tips:

  • White clay:: Some of its properties are: disinfectant, anti inflammatory, anti bacterial, revitalising, mineralising, a pain killer, etc. It is advisable to get it as a powder because you can conserve it, it is cheaper and contains no chemicals; when it comes to making the paste, it is much easier. Tip: If you leave it in the sun for a few minutes before making it strengthens its properties.

  • Infused sage and thyme: The sage serves as a natural teeth whitener and helps if you suffer from sensitive, bleeding or inflamed gums. Thyme is anti bacterial. How to make it: Heat a little bit of water and add the herbs until it gives off its benefits and then leave it to cool before adding it to the mix.

  • Mint essential oil: Acts as a pain killer, is refreshing and antibacterial.

  • Aloe Vera: In Mexico it is known as Sábila. It is a very curative plant so I use it very often. It has antibacterial properties,... USE: Cut a leaf off the plant, it is always recommended that the plant is a few years old (it has more benefits when it is older). Leave it in a jar or some other container overnight so that it can drip, expelling a yellowish liquid which isn't beneficial. One night to rest will be enough. Once the leaf releases this liquid, it is ready to use! Now, peal it, first the thorns and then the rest of the green bark. We are left with its slimy, transparent interior. Leave it in a bowl, covered with water so that it softens and when it comes to adding the mix it will be much easier to manage since it practically dissolves.

  • Sea salt: Anti inflammatory properties. It contains magnesium which helps with the creation of the tooth enamel. It has to be natural sea salt that has not been IODISED! The iodinated salt is very bad for our body

  • Bicarbonate soda: Helps to eliminate plaque and polish the teeth, it can be slightly abrasive, thats why we only use two pinches. Sometimes I have made the paste without the bicarbonate soda because it is abrasive and I don't really agree with it, but since we only use a very small amount it is not so bad.

PREPARATION:

Add 10 spoonfuls of the infused sage and thyme and we are going to gradually add the rest, 2 pinches of salt, 2 pinches of bicarbonate soda, 4 drops of mint essential oil, a piece of aloe vera, mixed well with a spoon.

I like to add some dry sage, thyme and mint leaves, as you can see in the photo. Since it doesn't look well leaving the leaves hole, I passed them through the blender to see if I could grind them more, although a mortar would also work. (Before adding them to our liquid base).

In this picture you can see them ground up.

Now, gradually add the white clay little by little, with patience, since it can make a lot of lumps, turning it with a spoon, to generate the paste texture that you can see in the picture. When you have a homogeneous paste it is ready to go into a container!

Since I didn't have anything at home, I used this, but it is better to use one that is not so elongated, so that it is easier to get onto the toothbrush.

I recommend that everyone in your family uses their own jar for hygiene purposes or you can apply the paste to your teeth with a toothpick or ice lolly stick. This way you don't have to put your tooth brush into the paste!

If you want to make more, you only have to double or triple the proportions of the liquids, even if you will have to thicken the mixture and get the creamy texture in the photo. Patience and think about it! :)

Well, now enjoy this super toothpaste with satisfaction that you have made it yourself in a simple ecological way.

I hope that you have found this interesting. I will continue uploading easy recipes that you can make at home, as simple as this one... best wishes to all!
