"Gomboți", a recipe from Eastern Europe

The recipe I share in this article is called in the Romanian language in two different ways, more precisely “gomboți” or “găluște”, being translated in english like “donuts with plum jam”. By the way, I just notice how the romanians are having many desserts with plum jam as a main ingredient in it. In the Eastern Europe, the dessert is preapred in many countries among which I mention Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland or Slovakia, in my country the sweet dish being also considered traditional.

What ingredients do you need for the recipe?

The ingredients that you will need for 30 pieces are the following:

  • 5 large white potatoes

  • 5 tablespoons of sugar

  • 3 sachets of vanilla sugar

  • 3 tablespoons of white flour

  • 300 grams of  breadcrumbs

  • a jar (400 grams) of plum jam

  • salt

  • and a little vegetable oil

How to make the potato dough?

The first step is to boil the white potatoes which are cooked whole and boiled. After boiling, peal the skin as they are still hot, mash them with a fork until a puree-like composition is made, add to it 5 tablespoons sugar, 3 tablespoons of flour, salt 1/2 teaspoon and 2 envelopes of vanilla sugar. The composition must be similar to a normal soft dough. Take a little dough. Sprinkle it with a little flour to not stick, stretch it and put jam in the interior and then form a donut or a “gălușca”.

Make all of the 30 donuts and placed them on a plate sprinkled with flour.

How to make the crust?

Then in a pan put 100 ml of oil, 3 tablespoons of sugar, 1 pachet of vanilla sugar and 300 grams of breadcrumbs. Roast on fire for about 10 minutes until lightly golden.

In the meantime, add in a pot about 2 liters of water. When the water starts to boil, begin to put the donuts you formed in this water and let it cooked for about 3 to 4 minutes.

When the dounts are baked, get it out of the boiling water and sprinkle each of it with the breadcrumbs crust. Repeat the same step untill all of the donuts have been baked. And here you have a dessert specific in the Eastern European countries. A delicious dessert that’s fits the vegan taste and people too.
