Glühwein period is not over!
All receipes on how to make mulled wine, or kuhano vino in Bosnian, or my most used term is the German word Glühwein, are similar. After experimenting, here are my recommendations.
Most associate mulled wine with Christmas and drink it only in the advent / Christmas period, but I enjoy it throughout the whole winter. If you look at these snowy photos from my window you'll see that it's clearly an appropriate time for a nice hot aromatic beverage.
There are no strict measures, as it depends as how much you'd like to drink, a glass or a bottle. (No judgment here.)
The following ingredients can be used for this witchery:
- Wine obviously (red or white)
- Cloves
- Cinnamon
- Anise
- Lemons
- Oranges
- Apples
- Honey / sugar
- Brandy/liqueur.
You don't have to have all of these ingredients for our magic potion, experiment with what you have. For example, apples go better with white wine, oranges with red wine.
Oh and the homemade cherry brandy, I used to spice up my wine:
First, we put water, cinnamon, cloves, anise, honey or sugar (brown or white) and some chopped fruit in the pot. If you are using wine that you don't like, add some squeezed orange juice. If you like the taste od the wine you're going to use, you might rethink that orange juice because it overwhelms the wine flavour.
Heat up all of those ingredients minimally until the sugar or wine melts. Only then do we add the wine and stir on a very low fire and under no circumstances should we let it boil. After our potion is all nice and warm, if you want an extra punch to your potion add some brandy to the wine at the end to compensate for the evaporated alcohol.
You can decorate it with cinnamon sticks and/or star anise, but I only put a few pieces of fruit.
I know people usually drink red mulled wine (guess because it's related to Christmas), but I tried white wine and it was even better!
All that is left is to drink and enjoy your potion!
