Famous Italian desserts: cannoli and granita
How to make Cannoli
When you want to have dessert after lunch, cannoli is one of my favourite Italian desserts for that. That light dessert will be even more pleasant with a cup of coffee or tea. If you are on your holidays in Sicily, you are lucky because you can try cannoli in best places. These are some of my favourite ones:
- Favia (on via Etna, they have many dessert alternatives in this cafe)
- Pasticceria Savia (via Etna, you can find many types of desserts)
Making cannoli is pretty easy but requires dexterity. You need to have manual skills to knead dough in order to prepare this delicious dessert. After this introduction, lets write the ingredients down. Firstly, essential ingredients for doug:;
- About 1 tablespoon of butter
- 12 grams of sugar
- About 300 grams of flour
- 1 egg
- Half teaspoon of salt
- 40 grams of powdered sugar
First of all, we put 300 grams of flour in a dough cup, leave a whole in the middle. Then, we break one egg and put it in the middle. We add other ingredients as in order. My girlfriend is pretty talented in preparing dough, so she is the one who does it. To avoid the dough breaking into pieces, its consistence has to be hard enough. The dough needs to rest for half an hour, then we put it on the counter. Then we make about one handful of small balls from dough and roll out. Roll it circularly. After it is flat enough, we wrap it around a metal cylinder. After all balls are ready, deep fry them until they turn bright yellow. Then we drain the fried dough and put it on a plate.
By the way, we can put ricotta cheese which is typical of Sicily.

We also need to put other ingredients. Now it is time to tell which other ingredients we put in it. These are:
- About 300 grams of ricotta cheese
- 2 tablespoons of pistachio, arbitrarily
- 1 tablespoon of crushed almond, arbitrarily
- If you like chocolate, you can put one or two pieces of chocolate
- And finally, 4 or 5 tablespoons of powdered sugar
It is easy to prepare other ingredients so I will take care of the rest. I mix 300 grams of ricotta, crushed chocolate and 2 spoons of pistachio. When they are mixed enough, we fill up the dough which we prepare earlier with the interior filling. After letting it rest a little we pour the powdered sugar on them and it is ready to serve. Finally, we can enjoy our dessert. As you see, it is pretty easy to make cannoli. You can find all ingredients in Turkey but I am not sure about the ricotta cheese.
How to make granita
Now, let's go on with granita which is our next recipe. Granita is on of the most consumed desserts in Sicily, especially during the summer. Actually, granita is a kind of ice-cream which looks like a popsicle mixed with some fruit nectar with syrup and frozen. If you suffer from intense heat and want to eat ice cream, you can try your own homemade granita.

Essential ingredients for granita:
- Half kilo of strawberry
- 350 ml of water
- 1 glass of sugar
- 1 tabblespoon of lemon juice
I love strawberries, so I adore strawberry ice cream. However, you can choose which fruit you prefer in your granita.
First of all, pour 350 ml of water into a pot. Then, add one glass of water and one spoon of lemon juice. Let it boil on low heat. After the sweetened juice starts to boil, take it from the fire and put it in the fridge to cool down. On the other hand, put the strawberries in a cup and grate them. Add the sweetened juice to the grated strawberries. Put the mixture in the fridge and let it freeze. After it freezes well you can enjoy your dessert.
I know girls all over the world love chocolate, so I will give you also granita recipe with chocolate.
It requires the same ingredients as the strawberry granita but this time we will use dark chocolate instead of strawberries. Melt the chocolate in a pan or a pot. After chocolate melts, pour it into a cup. Add the syrup that you had prepared earlier to the melted chocolate and mix it properly. Then fill up glasses with the mixture and put it in the fridge. After it freezes, take it out from the fridge and enjoy it.
