Corn dogs
Corn dogs are another one of the traditional American foods that I have a love - hate relationship with. Why? Because I am not really a big fan of hot dogs, but I love the corn dough, and they taste really well together.
Homemade corn dogs might not look as good as the ones you get in a restaurant, but they are just as delicious.
A lot of stores are selling frozen corn dogs, but they taste much better when you make them at home. Well, just like everything else.
This is the type of frozen corn dogs that you will find in many grocery stores.
And one of my American friends gave me this recipe, and I have to say that I love it! So here it is.
Ingredients
This amount of ingredients will make twenty corn dogs, so unless you are really hungry, you will have to freeze most of them after making them.
- One cup of regular yellow cornmeal
- 20 beef hot dogs (If you are not a fan of 'real' hot dogs, just like me, you can use vegan hot dogs. I tried them and they taste almost the same as regular hot dogs. )
- One cup of flour (all purpose flour works just fine)
- Two tablespoons of baking powder
- Half a cup of white sugar (brown sugar does not work well in this case)
- A pinch of salt
- A pinch of pepper
- Canola oil for frying the corn dogs
- 20 wooden skewers
Preparation
The whole corn dogs preparation, including preparing all the ingredients and cleaning up afterwards, will take you about one hour. First, get a small bowl, and combine the cornmeal, all purpose flour, sugar, salt and pepper and baking powder, and then add milk and eggs. Make sure you stir well, because you want to avoid the lumps in the dough. Then, cover the bowl with a cloth and let it rest for a few minutes.
In the meantime, heat up the canola oil. To make sure the oil temperature is perfect, put a few droplets of the dough inside. The oil is ready when the dough immediately turns golden brown. Then, take the beef hot dogs and insert a wooden skewer into each one. This is more tricky than it sounds, but I started to get the hang of it after a few miserable attempts.
When you inserted all the wooden skewers, stick the hot dogs into the dough and make sure their entire surface is covered in dough. Fry the hot dogs over medium heat for approximately three minutes or until they turn golden brown. After that, drain them on paper towels and once they cool down, you can try them out.
This is how the final result will look like. All you need to do now is eat them.
Storage and serving suggestions
There are plenty of ways to serve corn dogs. The simplest way is to just eat them as they are. But for a more ‘sophisticated’ dining experience, you can serve corn dogs with fried onion rings and french fries. You can also dip them in mustard and ketchup. Or, for more adventurous souls out there, drizzle some hot sauce on top.
Two of the best corn dog toppings - mustard and ketchup.
Storing corn dogs is easy - all you have to do is freeze them. And when you are ready to eat them, just stick them in the microwave for a few minutes. The exact time depends on how thick the dough is. And do not forget to turn them over a few times when heating them in the microwave.
