If you are craving for freshly made, crunchy waffles, still a little gooey on the inside, you can either buy frozen waffles at your local grocery store, go to Waffle House, or make them yourself. I do not have anything against Waffle house. I actually think their waffles are pretty good, especially the pecan ones, but I still love to make my own food, so here is my favourite recipe for waffles.

Waffles make a great breakfast.

Ingredients

If you do not feel like preparing waffle mix by yourself, you can buy waffle mix in basically any grocery store in the United states of America. The waffles that you prepare with that waffle mix, are made way faster, but I think that they taste more delicious if you make them from scratch. So in this recipe, I will tell you how to prepare the waffle mix by yourself.

And a very important thing you must know before you start making the waffle mix - you need to have a waffle maker (also called a waffle iron) to make them! But do not worry, waffle makers are pretty cheap. In fact, you can get them for like fifteen dollars on Amazon, which is an amazing investment if you like waffles at least a little bit.

This is my waffle maker that I bought at Walmart for twenty dollars. It heats up in a few minutes and you can make four waffles at a time in it.

So, for this recipe, which will make about ten waffles, you will need:

  • 150 grams of all purpose flour
  • One tablespoon of regular sugar
  • 50 millilitres of sunflower oil
  • 200 millilitres of whole milk (you can use regular fat milk, but the waffles taste so much better if you use whole milk)
  • One teaspoon of baking powder
  • One large egg
  • A teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Preparation

Before you start preparing the waffle mix, preheat the waffle maker. The time that each waffle maker takes to warm up, is different from model to model, but in general, the warming up should not take more than twenty minutes.

In a medium sized bowl, mix sugar, all purpose flour, baking powder, and add a pinch of salt. You can easily mix these ingredients with a spoon. Then, take another bowl, and add milk, vanilla extract, egg, and sunflower oil. Then, pour the mixture over the mix of flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Mix well - there should be no lumps.

Once the waffle maker is ready, spray it with cooking oil spray, and add the waffle mixture. The easiest way to pour the waffle mixture onto the waffle maker is to use the pyrex cup (such as the one on the picture below). Make sure you do not put too much waffle mixture into the waffle maker because it will overflow. The right amount should cover about half the height of the waffle maker.

Pyrex cups make pouring waffle mix into the waffle maker so much easier.

Then, close the top of the waffle maker. The one that I have, takes about four minutes for the waffles to be ready. How will you know when the waffles are ready? Slowly open the top of the waffle maker - when waffles are done, they should be golden brown.

Storage and serving suggestions

Waffles taste the most amazing while they are freshly made. They will be super crispy when they are still warm, and this is the way I love to eat them the most. Sometimes I eat them plain, sometimes with berries, syrup and/or whipped cream on top. And when I am having a bad day and feel like I should treat myself, I spread a generous coat of Nutella on top and I immediately feel better.

The best way of serving chocolate chip waffles - with whipped cream on top!

If you would like to store the waffles, you can freeze them, and then simply reheat them in the toaster, or even in the microwave. They will not be as crispy and good as freshly made waffles, but they will still be delicious.
