American-style pancakes

When you order pancakes in Europe, you will get what American people call ‘crepes’. Pancakes in America are way different. They are puffy and wiggly and delicious. And since I love them so much and the preparation is more than simple, why not share the recipe with you so you can enjoy them too?

American pancakes... As seen in so many movies.

Ingredients

The ingredients depend on the type of pancakes you would like to make. If you wish to make plain pancakes, you do not need to add anything special into the pancake mix. For chocolate chip pancakes, add chocolate chips, and for cinnamon pancakes, add cinnamon chips. It is as simple as that.

Hershey's cinnamon chips are the best. For chocolate chips, I prefer the Nestle brand.

This amount of ingredients will make enough pancakes for up to five people.

  • 250 grams all – purpose flour
  • One tablespoon of baking powder
  • Four eggs
  • 30 grams of melted butter (alternatively, you can just use canola oil)
  • One tablespoon of brown sugar
  • Chocolate chips/cinnamon chips (or both)
  • Whipped cream

Preparation

In a medium bowl, mix all the flour, brown sugar and baking powder. Make a hole in the center and add milk, eggs and melted butter (or canola oil). Whish everything together, and make sure there are no lumps. If you want to add chocolate or cinnamon chips, do so at this point.

Spray some cooking oil into a skillet or a frying pan. Use medium heat. Once the skillet is heated, pour small batches of pancake mix on it. I usually make sure they are not more than 6 centimeters wide. If you are planning on making more than one pancake at a time, make sure you do not put them too close together. If you do, they will be sticking to each other.

Cook every pancake on one side for approximately one minute and a half. You will know the pancake is ready to flip over when the bubbles will start appearing on its surface. Once this happens, flip the pancake to the other side and cook for an additional minute.

Storage and serving suggestions

You can get as creative with the pancake toppings as you want.

Depending on your taste, and also the type of pancakes that you made, these are the most common serving suggestions that I love. For cinnamon chip pancakes and chocolate chip pancakes, drizzle some chocolate syrup on top and add whipped cream to the side. If you made plain pancakes, either drizzle some maple syrup on top and add some bacon on the side, or cut up some strawberries and add some whipped cream on the side. Enjoy!

Some people also serve pancakes with butter on top. You have to put it on the pancakes while they are still hot, so it will melt nicely.

Pancakes taste the best when they are fresh. But if you did not manage to eat all of them, you can put them in a zip lock bag and put them in the refrigerator for up to five days. When you are ready to eat them, put them on a microwave – safe plate and heat them for twenty seconds.
