If You Can't Take the Heat, Get into a Cold Rock

Scorching day

This one was inspired after checking the weather in Adelaide for this coming saturday. You wake up on a beautiful Adelaidian day. Its 8 AM (who even wakes up this early in the break?) summer's day and already 28 degrees.celsius. Your groggy mind somehow guides you to the bathroom where you soak yourself in cold water. You get out, have brekkie, spend a half hour on your phone catching up with the news, album releases or just random browsing. It's around 9:30 AM by the time you decide to get up and wash your bowl. The weather decides to turn it up a notch, its 34C without a cloud in the sky.

You throw your arms up in frustration. In need to cool down, you grab a beach towel, sun cream and other beach necessities including your trusty shades. You step outside of your house. The heat hits you like a slap on the face. You quickly make it to the bus, strategically using every inch of shade that any fence or tree can provide. You head into the city wearing nothing but a thin t shirt, swimming trunks and thongs (flip flops, you dirty pirates).

You jump on the gloriously air-conditioned tram and make your way down to Glenelg beach. This beach holds many great spots to eat and enjoy a sweet treat. Adelaide itself sports very high quality and delicious ice-creams (since our ice-creams are predominantly gelatti). However, there is a specific chain that blows most of these ice-cream shops out of the water.

Beach

You’re lying in the beach and it's just past 1pm. The weather is at the height of its harshness with 39C scorching this piece of land down under. You’re too hot to think of food, but the idea comes to you: what would be more perfect than a large refreshing ice-cream.

This is where location is key. Rather than going to the main touristic plaza with their overpriced mediocre ice-cream, you’ll need to get yourself around the beach’s playground, behind some slides and tall buildings, From there you can spot in big blue words’ Cold Rock’.

The promised land

Sweating from every pore in your body, you barge into the heavenly cooled small store. Lo and behold! In front you’ll see roughly two dozen different flavours of ice cream. Flavours ranging from peanut butter, cake batter, cookies and cream, fruity sorbets of all kinds and many more flavours.

This chain has become popular due to an extra addition in its ice cream: it's toppings. When you order your ice-cream flavours, whether you prefer cone or cup, you are led to a glassed section filled with toppings of all kinds. You may choose to have these toppings for an additional cost. From mini chocolate bars such as snickers to mars bars and cherry ripe to chocolates such as raffaello. You can also get m&ms, marshmallows oreos; if you’re feeling on the adventurous side, you can select gummy bears, sour worms, jaffas and more.

In my first attempt at one of these, I chose a cup of both cake batter and cookies and cream. I decided I wanted more punch with my order so I decided to get tim tams and cherry ripe toppings. In between the ice-cream and toppings section you have a long white counter where you can witness the magic.

They first scoop up your chosen flavours and place them on the table, they then use two specialised spoons to cut into the ice-cream. They chop it up, mix it and chop it up again to get the flavours properly fusioned. They then select your toppings flavours and put them right into the mixture. They smash, cut, break and tear up the whole mix, flip, spin and mix. By the end of it you get a delicious concoction which they slap onto your cone or cup and hand them to you.

I found this to be my most delicious ice-cream shop in Adelaide. This chain has many flavours and toppings to mix and match, so it's never the same old boring options. Another great thing about this chain is their cakes.

In a little corner of the shop you see a display fridge filled to the brim with strange and unique creations. Some brightly covered, some looking like they’d flow all over the table with chocolate if you sliced it.

You can always order your own custom cake for any celebration. Whether its welcome backs, birthdays or a congratulatory cake. Cold Rock has chains all over Australia. I’ve been to the other one in Adelaide far east of the beach and one in Darwin, north of Australia. A completely satisfying experience.

I have been to quite a few ice-cream and gelato shops, although this is easily my favourite in Adelaide. Easy to access if you’re in Glenelg beach or in the city, it a place you shouldn’t miss out. I highly recommend you look up their cakes. It'll be time worth spent.

That’s it for this one, happy eating and drink responsibly on your adventures!
