Erasmus Experience in Winterthur
Why did you choose to go to Winterthur, Switzerland?
I didn't choose it. There was a problem with my previous Erasmus destination, so Switzerland and Austria where the only options left.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
It is for 10 months. You don't receive really a lot of money.
What is the student lifestyle like in Winterthur?
It is really nice. There live a lot of University students, mostly from Management and Law.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Winterthur to other students?
Yes, absolutely.
What is the food like?
It is really good. You have a wide variety of food different countries (japanese, thai, indian, argentinian, mexican... ) and of course I can't forget to mention Swiss chocolate and cheese. They are delicious
How much does it cost to live in Winterthur?
It is really expensive. If you live on a students camp it may cost you around 600 CHF per month. If you prefer to rent an apartment it may cost you more than 1000 CHF.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
No, not easy at all. Even if you studied German before coming, here people speak Swiss German, which has nothing to do. It is really difficult to understand. Anyway the University offers courses in German.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Winterthur from your city?
By plane. (50 € - 200 €)
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Vigo?
Near to the train station there are a lot of cool clubs to have fun. Zimmer 31, Bolero, Archbar...
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Winterthur?
The restaurant Tandoor is an Indian restaurant, and it has really tasty food. Sometimes you can have free buffet. But make sure to save some money before.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The Technorama, the museum of sciences. It's very interactive. There are also theaters, cinemas and other museums.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Winterthur in the future?
The train is quite expensive to afford, so if you are under 30 you should get the "Halb Tax" which reduces the cost of your travels to the half, and the "Gleis Sieben" which allows you to travel for free after 19:00.
