Experience in Vigo, Spain by Angelitta
What is it like to live in Vigo? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Vigo is a very small traditional city right on the water. It's a very authentic Spanish city, that flourishes in education and business. There are many things to do and really nice clubs.
What is the student lifestyle like in Vigo?
The Erasmus program in Vigo is wonderful. There are students from all over the world that can help you with understanding the local culture and improving your Spanish. The students at the Universidad de Vigo are really nice and helpful.
How much does it cost to live in Vigo?
Very inexpensive, the rent depends on what your willing to pay and what you want. You'll probably pay €150 - €200 euros a month for student housing, but you compromise on privacy. It's about €300 if you decide to stay with a local family, but you'll learn Spanish, you'll have more privacy, and less distractions when studying.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Vigo? Is there any advice you can give?
It is not difficult to find accommodation; my best advice would be to go to the staff at the University, they have a database full of apartments for renting.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Seafood and pork are abundant and fresh. My favorite foods were paella (seafood dish), ham, egg, and cheese sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, and wine.
What places would you recommend visiting in Vigo?
Castro park, the shopping districts, the marina, Cíes Islands...
Is it good to eat out in Vigo? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Eating out is great because you can typically negotiate the price you want to pay. You can get a meal at a cafe for €6.
Is the nightlife good in Vigo? Where is good to go?
Very good night spots in Vigo, can't remember the names.
What advice would you give future students heading to Vigo?
If you want to discover the language and culture of Spain, Vigo is the place to be. It's an inexpensive city, and it's inexpensive to travel to another city/country. But remember, you're a student first. School won't be easy, and the teachers will not care that you didn't turn in a test because you went to an Erasmus party the night before.
Communicate with your teachers, make sure they're aware of your skill level and your efforts in your studies. Less than 10% of students make A's and B's in that school. Make sure you balance your work and social life.
